I agree with you 100% and I think that was their first thought, as far as nominating Childish, Kendrick, Sza, and many others that normally might not be nominated all together. When it comes down to the final voting though, they can only vote on 15 categories I believe, so I think many gave pity votes to Ed because their desire to award diverse talent from that year, and assuming he would be nominated, pushed him out of major categories and they voted for his win in the other categories the next round of voting.
