Gaga has talked about this in several interviews, including that Emotion Revolution Summit where she said she had to start saying "no" because she was tired of being used as a "money making machine". It's highly likely that early in Gaga's career that she was pushed into promo, and at times she cleverly got away with it (in the Telephone video for example) by making it about fashion or saying it was a "comment" on society. But the truth is...she probably was coerced into alot more stuff than we even realize early on. What is brilliant about Gaga is she often times used them back to elevate her own brand, her own mystique. It was never Gaga doing a Coca-Cola commercial or a Polaroid commercial or a Google commercial or a Beats by Dre commercial. She cleverly made it into popart: The Coca-cola cans in her hair, the beats by dre on the guys in the BR video, the stunning visuals that were intended for Edge of Glory but became a Google Chrome commercial, the high brow photoshoots that came with every fashion line she promoted from Mugler to Versace. Most popstars just do Covergirl or Maybelline commercials. Gaga took her commercial opportunities and made them art. That's the difference. Kanye was just pointing that out and he used (at the time) the biggest pop star in the world as a reference. If anything it's a compliment to how wildly popular and massive Gaga was: she didn't need to know **** about cameras. She's Lady ****ing Gaga.
