Sure I agree but **** sex is classed as high risk and a majority of **** sex is practiced by gay men. So whilst gay men aren't a high risk themselves, the activity itself is high risk. I do understand why these testing periods are in effect but the advancement in testing means the 12 month period isn't really necessary anymore. HIV is also much more prevalent in the gay male community, thats another reason for this ban. Regardless, it's such an outdated rule and they test blood for STD's anyways so there's literally no reason for this ban . Modern testing can detect HIV as early as 4 weeks now and up to 3 months. So yeah I understand why there needs to be some sort of time period post-contact but 12 months isn't necessary. 3 months post contact should be sufficient really. In addition to meeting all other donor eligibility criteria, a man is eligible to donate blood if his last sexual contact with another man (**** or oral sex) was 12 or more months ago.
