According to SmartAsset.com, in Kansas you're take home pay at the end of the month would be 774 dollars making 11 dollars hours working 40 hours a week after taxes.

Good luck to anyone making that a month. You're never gonna be able to save anything to help ur future. Hell, u won't be able to provide herself a decent present.

A person making 22K a year would bring home 1,500 a month. That's enough for a single person to afford rent and buy food and necessities in the majority of rural areas in the US. (which is where most Walmart are located)

Also, 22,000 is not poverty level. 12,000 is poverty level in the US.

What the hell?? I make about $11USD an hour, work a 40 hour week, and take home about $1350USD a month... what the hell kind of taxes exist in America that you get paid so little of what you earn??? Are you taxed about 50%???

I assume hes exagerating on the comment

I make $50,000 a year (about $40,000 in US Dollars) here in Canada and the taxes I pay are about 15% when the total tax at end of year is adjusted

I do enter a higher tax bracket but only a small percentage of my income is taxed at that rate while most of it is taxed at a very low rate

US income tax is simmilar to Canadas with a few variances so I assume middle-low income like me is also around 15%

Thats just taxes... I lose more like 25% to 28% tho if I include CPP (retirement) deductions and Unemployment Insurance deductions

Thats automation tho. Like selfcheckouts for example

more productivity with less labor isnt a bad thing initself it allows for wealthier economy

but its bad in the sense that jobs going are level-entry jobs that people need to start, students etc. Its a pity they are disapearing

It's not automation, they're closing a lot of stores entirely. And they have their reasons for doing that I'm sure, but I think they intentionally misled us to believe they're using their tax reform savings to raise wages, when in fact they're offsetting those wage increases by cutting jobs elsewhere.

Also the one-time bonuses they're bragging about only go to people who have been working there for 20 years. So again, they sort of painted this rosy picture of trickle-down economics ("we got a tax cut, so our employees will get paid more) when in fact they're not being nearly as generous as they've made themselves out to be.

I'm less bothered about that, and more bothered about the fact that people (including basically everyone who commented on the first page of this thread) are giving the GOP tax reform credit for doing a good thing for working class Americans. In reality, Walmart just timed this announcement perfectly.

Well closing stores to save on labor doesnt make sense as they loose business in those stores completely

probably those stores were just running losses and they werent worth keeping open

Keep in mind Multi-Billion Dollar Companies look huge until u put it down by unit... $7 Billion Profit for example in a $70 Billion income company for example is only 10% margin for profit

Im an investor and I see many large Corporations with profit margins of only 1% to 3% where the smallest change can make losses even if when u see the total profits u wouldnt think so. Its very common in Air Lines

im generalizing tho, i dunno Walmart stats specifically cuz i never bought into their stock

Ive also seen Profit margins as high as 35% of income especially in banks/insurance companies

But it varies a lot by industry and by company. Some Huge companies dont have as much to giveaway to employees as people think they do. Again im generalizing not talking about Walmart

Is that profit or gross revenue ur talking about? I know u work in trucking, is $9000 after fuel, insurance and other costs?

$9000 in a good month is crazy if thats net income

My pay is just over $4000 a month ($5000 in months with 5 pay days)...

of which over 25% is gone after taxes, retirement deductions and unemployment insurance deductions

If the Government wants to help (wont happen under Trumps leadership) then raising benefits and help for those struggling is a better idea

raising minimum wage too much could encourage too many to stay complacent to not go after something better instead of ppl that are just forced to stay in these jobs due to live circumstances

raising minimum wage too much will only result in too much job losses in low skilled jobs that are needed for experience building, students to start off etc

This is so true. I used to be part of the crowd that said raise the wage, raise the wage, but after reading more about it, it hurts workers, raises inflation, and cuts benefits. People get fired and it just is not good.

I never understood why people advocated for a $15 minimum wage, it just doesn't make sense if you know about economics. Businesses want profit, and they deserve profit, and they will raise prices, fire people, scale back hours, and do things to get more money. Leave it where it is, do tax cuts, encourage more education, and hopefully wages rise naturally, not by inflation or unnecessary government intervention in the economy.

I advocate for a Single Payer Healthcare System (so healthcare costs go down, it is so expensive here in America) and replacing the Income & Corporate Tax with a flat tax on income and business profits of about 16%, limit deductions, rise the standard deduction so it is not regressive, and the studies show more revenue will come into the government taking into account GDP growth, the economy will rise drastically, and wages go up.

But they are also firing 1000's from Sam's Stores that are closing.

And they are not giving raises to stores in Puerto Rico.

Break downs and repairs are a triple negative...no income, repair cost & hotel can wipe out profit for a month or more...

A good month when I can haul steady 'net''s me 9k , more or less...gross is 120k to 150k per year, gross... depending on the economy/fuel prices/ me being lazy..ect.

Thanks to some pressure by the governor of Puerto Rico and questions by the media here is some good news.

BREAKING: Walmart agrees to extend minimum wage increase ($11 an hr) to ALL employees in Puerto Rico, announces Governor Ricardo Rossello

3 hours ago we tweeted that the Gov was asking Walmart to reconsider its position. It didn't take long.

In a statement, released Saturday night, Walmart announced:

“As we have demonstrated consistently throughout our 25 year history in Puerto Rico, Walmart is deeply committed to Puerto Rico and our local associates and as part of the bonus announcement made earlier this week, eligible Walmart and Sam’s Club hourly associates on the island will be receiving nearly $5 million in cash bonuses as well as expanded maternity and parental leave benefits that are beyond what is typically offered in retail. Additionally, the starting wage for all Walmart and Sam’s Club hourly associates in Puerto Rico will be at least $11 per hour beginning with the February 17 pay cycle.”

Nice! My income is always the same if i dont miss any hours

44h a week at $18/h

6h a week overtime at $27/h

= $952/week (plus vacation pay)

Taxes: $143 (15%)

EI deductions: $16.20

CPP deductions (retirement): $41

Health deductions $14.11

Net Pay = $737.69

So according to info in my pay stub i lose  22.5% of my income to deductions to be exact 👀

Taxes in Canada really arent as bad as people make it out to be. In Europe where I was from its way bloody worse 😅
