This concept irks me, are we saying poor people can't make a living wage because if they do they will stop wanting more money? I don't believe this is true. In the grand economic sense, I'm not convinced it would slow down people's upward mobility or growth. I could be swayed. Even if it's proven that it does, does it matter? If people are making a good living...do we care? lol

The other part of it with the job losses - if you can't pay an employee a good wage, you shouldn't have an employee, or potentially, a business. I think it would work out. We need social services/taxes to subsidize people better - not have more low-wage jobs. I think the future is automation and universal healthcare/universal basic income. We need to start thinking about a future where not everyone works 40 hrs/week to survive. It might be a rough transition, but I think we should encourage a higher minimum wage and fix the consequences, not avoid paying people a decent wage.

For these large corps, they can afford $15. Prices wouldn't even get raised that much - there are more than enough profits to cover increased salaries.

For small businesses, see my second paragraph lol. I don't think we should encourage people to start businesses by taking advantage of people. Starting a  business is hard. You need to consider what you're trying to achieve and if you can pay people to help you, great. if not, maybe you need a better business model. *shrug*

Thats not a bad idea nor is it a new concept... but it would require world co-operation and a lot of new laws which is too politically difficult for dusfunctional governments and un-united world

For starters basic income for reduced workload/hours from automation would have to be payed for thru much higher taxes to redistribute more wealth from automation productivity. That means Nations who do this could loose a lot of companies who run away to Nations not doing this that have low taxes. So it would require global co-operation to introduce this system all at once in all Nations

Also laws limiting hours worked per employee in some industries could help so that reduced hours could be split thru more employment for more people, then basic income fills the rest of the gap.

Also high automation requires many high skill positions such as computer programers, engeneers etc. These positions are already in shortage. High emphasis on education would also be a must for such a system to work

They got an 18 billion dollar cut and are giving employees on average $180 more. Wow. So good for Walmart.

If Walmart employees were paid a wage they could live on without government assistance, with the money the government saves alone they could DOUBLE all research and development that takes place in the United States.

THAT is how much the government subsidizes Walmart as a company and their employees. But so glad they got an $18 billion tax break.

Of course. But thats all the more reason why minimum wage needs to be balanced

make it too high and too many low skill jobs ppl can start with are lost and thats a problem too

here in Ontario minimum wage was raised to $14/h and will be raised to $15/h next year

ppl been getting fired and hours cut left and right

my fiances retail store fired 4 people when new minimum wage took effect and she wasnt fired but they cut her hours to 18 hours a week so shes worse off than before :air:

minimum wage too high will also accelerate shift to things like self checkouts for example

im not against a very high minimim wage because i dont recognize theres a poverty problem, im against it because I realize good intentions dont necessairily equal results

This will backfire big time in Ontario. Even after the bulk of job losses are gone, i dont think the few that kept all their hours that benefit from this will offset the damage done 😣

well presumably people in that position would work 2 part time job and come out quite well?

Thays where i used to live :deadbanana:

Used to, good for you :deadbanana:

Well, Portugal is an amazing country, don't get me wrong. It's the "coolest destination in the world" according to recent travelling magazines, there's a lot of life and things to do, it's one of the most beautiful countries I've seen full of cultures, amazing food, and Lisbon is probably the most soulful capital there is. And fair enough, our lifestyle is still very cheap compared to other countries. And we're one of the safest countries.

But our economy sucks. We are not paid enough and things are starting to get more and more expensive. Job opportunities are not very good and unless you have a really good degree (like medical degree), rich parents or work in a huge company, you'll struggle, A LOT.

But you know, if you happen to get a really good job here, that's well paid, you can't find a better place.

What I see in your argument vs Economy’s is ideal vs reality.

yes, I don’t think it’s fair to pay people less than what they deserve, of course. BUT it’s not logical to go from say $10 to $15 immediately. A more gradual increase would be the most effective whether you agree with it or not.

Besides the hassle of having to comute twice and having to find job that actually has a compatible schedule with your forst job which already isnt easy as it is...

if theres less positions because they were cut it wont be easy for everyone to be searching for  second job and actually finding one

What are those numbers? Is that the annual tax cut? Also $180????? You must mean the bonus right cuz the wage would of gone up more than that

Screw Walmart, get a job at Costco...they have full insurance benefits for part time workers!  In the US, that's what benefit you need to look for!

A part time salesperson of a clothing store gets around USD $6-7/h in Hong Kong and this city isn’t cheap at all. :laughga::toofunny:

this is good, i am all for this move by walmart. What I'm saying is we shouldn't talk about it like it's good enough when it's not. If we are truly going to hold the ideals in my comments, we need to advocate for them. That's not what I was seeing in this thread *shrug*
