lol cool, now they can all still need to rely on government subsidies for food & healthcare. $15 is really where we need to be as a country. This is speaking from experience. Especially since most of these jobs are just part-time.

I was just about to say this :laughga:

Don’t let them fool y’all into thinking that they have your back. This is totally a PR move. Speaking from experience, Walmart really doesn’t have its employees’ interest at heart. If it were up to them, they’d pay slave wages LOL

i agree. i know people who work at walmart and it's all about corporate greed. walmart makes SO MUCH MONEY and it barely trickles down. they recently made it so that "sick leave" = only useable when you are caring for SOMEONE ELSE and not yourself, like wtf is that. the target in my area has been hiring at 14-15 dollars an hour since it opened last year :selena:

I work in retail in the UK and I started on £5.93 an hour, I now earn £8 an hour in the same job (albeit with more responsibility) which is around $11.

Wages in the UK are continually increasing to meet inflation demands so I could be on more than £10 an hour soon; more than the average office clerk because my employer is ethical and pays everyone the national living wage regardless of age :queenga:

That doesn’t surprise me, my friend who has a kid quit because they wouldn’t give her any days off she needed for her kid (like, his ceremonies, parent-teacher meeting, etc.) and their excuse was that corporate doesn’t want employees to be “abusing” the system, as if asking for a day off to go to your own son’s parent-teacher meeting was “taking advantage” of Walmart :ladyhaha:

yeah. and the bonus thing is laughable because i know for a fact that bonuses run 100 - 200 dollars AND BELOW, and the walmart near me didn't even give a dime this last year (according to the person i know who has been there for 12 years) and it is one of the busiest walmarts in the western US

In the United States, I find it important for state governments to analyze and increase minimum wages. A $15 minimum wage in California would still be low with the cost of living there, but a $15 minimum wage in Kentucky would be akin to what many salaried people make across the state due to the lower cost of living.

That being said, in many parts of the country Walmart is a large employer to smaller, more impoverished communities. It's easy to say "you shouldn't settle" or "you should aspire to more" when a lot of us live in locations with the means to find jobs with more upward mobility.

Of course. But thats all the more reason why minimum wage needs to be balanced

make it too high and too many low skill jobs ppl can start with are lost and thats a problem too

here in Ontario minimum wage was raised to $14/h and will be raised to $15/h next year

ppl been getting fired and hours cut left and right

my fiances retail store fired 4 people when new minimum wage took effect and she wasnt fired but they cut her hours to 18 hours a week so shes worse off than before :air:

minimum wage too high will also accelerate shift to things like self checkouts for example

im not against a very high minimim wage because i dont recognize theres a poverty problem, im against it because I realize good intentions dont necessairily equal results

This will backfire big time in Ontario. Even after the bulk of job losses are gone, i dont think the few that kept all their hours that benefit from this will offset the damage done 😣

If the Government wants to help (wont happen under Trumps leadership) then raising benefits and help for those struggling is a better idea

raising minimum wage too much could encourage too many to stay complacent to not go after something better instead of ppl that are just forced to stay in these jobs due to live circumstances

raising minimum wage too much will only result in too much job losses in low skilled jobs that are needed for experience building, students to start off etc

This concept irks me, are we saying poor people can't make a living wage because if they do they will stop wanting more money? I don't believe this is true. In the grand economic sense, I'm not convinced it would slow down people's upward mobility or growth. I could be swayed. Even if it's proven that it does, does it matter? If people are making a good living...do we care? lol

The other part of it with the job losses - if you can't pay an employee a good wage, you shouldn't have an employee, or potentially, a business. I think it would work out. We need social services/taxes to subsidize people better - not have more low-wage jobs. I think the future is automation and universal healthcare/universal basic income. We need to start thinking about a future where not everyone works 40 hrs/week to survive. It might be a rough transition, but I think we should encourage a higher minimum wage and fix the consequences, not avoid paying people a decent wage.

For these large corps, they can afford $15. Prices wouldn't even get raised that much - there are more than enough profits to cover increased salaries.

For small businesses, see my second paragraph lol. I don't think we should encourage people to start businesses by taking advantage of people. Starting a  business is hard. You need to consider what you're trying to achieve and if you can pay people to help you, great. if not, maybe you need a better business model. *shrug*

The Walmart I used to work at was apparently #1 in our county (San Bernardino County in Cali), yet the last bonus we got before I quit was literally $67. Literally. $67. I was there for over a year and they have me $67 for my bonus. And we were “the Walmart with the highest sales” in the county. Like... :triggered:
