Nice! It's crazy to think that something that should be a given... just isn't.

The problem now is tho if u have a female worker that just isnt a very good worker ull have to pay her as much as the rest

that could be an issue in some cases cuz non unionized companies negotiate each wage with employees and better employees get more money

i dunno good intention but i feel it will backfire... if a woman happens to be slower or not as good as male counterparts, she may not be worth her pay and just get fired :/

EDIT: Will also mention my work for example. I work in a steel shop and weve had maybe 3 female employees in shop since i worked here, and at risk of souding sexist, in a job like this they do not produce the same...

they could not pick up loads with as much weight and had to use craine for everything which slowed things down... thats just the way it was... i dont think my boss would hire them if he had to pay them the same tbh 👀

Yaaas

but I can’t believe it’s a law only in Iceland

like all other countries are just blatantly discriminating women

Guys many countries are known for striving for equality and have not made this into law and i think i can guess why

Read my last comment above on the second page ^^^^^^^^^^^

Equality is great but sometimes regulations or rules dont work to really fix the problem, at least not without causing other problems in the process and im not surprised the vast majority of countries havent made this a law

With a law like this you force a company to pay a woman the same as their male worker even if their reasons for paying them less had nothing to do with gender... maybe a specific woman is just slow at her job, or not a great worker... now what? U have to pay her the same because its the law?

And even still in other jobs like mine franqkly (read my post above for more details) they just dont produce quite the same, force equal pay and many employers just wont wanna hire women period for certain types of jobs.

Before u accuse Governments of not caring, understand that pros and cons have to be weighed, and a law like this has a lot of downsides as well

Theres pros to the law as well tho. In some cases women are being payed less just as a result of discrimination. Id like to hear womans perspectives directly @Zilla @Kayla @StrawberryBlond @KillerCupcake @GagaMonster @KillerQueen

Then it's your boss' fault for hiring them for the same job. If it's clear that they are unable to do that specific job then why did your boss hire them at all? This law is obviously for situations where the man and woman are doing jobs to the same degree - anything else is simply personal work ethic/personal under-qualification. Your boss is basically hiring women just because it's cheaper, knowing that it'll slow down progress and worsen quality. Just get people more qualified...

Women have made up an extremely small portion of our workers, if he were hiring them for cheaper labor he would of found more

also i dont know what they were being paid. My point was just that they werent as productive in this field and if he was forced to pay them the same he might not wanna keep them

but they werent totally useless, they still got work done. Its not like they were not worth having, they just werent on par for the top wages

@Economy I think you're misunderstanding the point of equal pay. It's not related to job performance, it's about the simple principle of "everyone working the same job with the same qualifications should be paid the same." The concept of those who are better at their job being paid more than their weaker colleagues just doesn't work in reality. Job performance can be subjective in many areas, particularly if it is say, the arts. But if the person has the right qualifications, turns up on time, does everything they're told and treats everyone on the team and customers well, there's no reason why they should be paid less just because they may not be as "gifted" as fellow colleagues. That has "unfair bias" written all over it and there's too much opportunity for discrimination to be made for whatever reason. It certainly won't do much for the already low self-esteem of the population at large. One of the biggest issues facing women employed today is that some of them are being paid less than men despite having the exact same qualifications, doing the exact same job and actually having more knowledge/expertise than the men. A lot of female newsreaders experience this and really, how can you say a newsreader does a better job than another? They just read an autocue. So what's with the unequal pay? On the BBC, a woman actually asked why male presenters on Radio 2 get paid more than the female presenters on Radio 4, despite said women having to have a much broader mine of knowledge, claiming that, through presenting Women's Hour, the interviewees are so eclectic that she has to know so much as "I could be interviewing the home secretary one day and Mary J Blige the next." Their male counterparts do not require such research and knowledge to do their jobs and yet they're paid more. Why?

As well meaning as you are, I think it's all too easy for men to misunderstand this concept because they don't suffer from it and incorrectly assume that it's an attack on their pay packet. There's no talk against lowering your wages (though some think the men's wages should be lowered to match the women's in the media as media personalities are all paid far too much) so there's no need to worry. It's a hard concept for a lot of men to take because they've been led to believe everything is equal now, they've never had to consider how much women earn in comparison, they've never been on the receiving end of the pay gap. When you research it, you're shocked. I remember reading an appalling story that claimed that a woman was promoted to a management position but shortly after, her position got demoted to a clerical grade. She was told the previous jobholder had been overpaid. But when she later left the company, her position was upgraded to management again. That's how crazy it is and how blatant the sexism is and we can't put up with it any longer.

I dont think u fully get what im trying to say tho... what im saying isnt that a pay gap problem for discriminairy reasons doesnt exist... what im saying is I think this is a bad way to fix it

I disagree with u in the equal pay for same position. Not in the gender itself but on productivity. I think better workers should get payed more as a reward and motivation. At my company i see it all the time. Some ppl are hard workers other frankly are just lazy

But if we are to enforce equal pay like ur suggesting, a better way for this I think would be to promote a lot more unions where everyone in same position gets payed the same regardless of age, gender etc. This way u catch all forms of discrimination not JUST the gender gap

also if u make the law only for women as i said, i honestly believe this could backfire as in some industries in particular some just wont wanna hire women at all such as in my industry

unions which is everyone in every circumstance regardless of experience productivity etc equal pay, should backfire less i think

dont misunderstand me, im not trying to downplay discrimination pay... im questioning whethet this is good way to tackle it

Iceland has always been ahead of everyone when it comes to social issues :golfclap:

John F. Kennedy passed the Equal Pay Act in the 1960's, a law which made it illegal for men and women to be paid different wages for the same work. Then in 2009 Obama passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, making it easier for women to sue their employers if they are facing pay discrimination.

So, if by ahead, you mean fifty years behind America, then sure.

Women should be paid the same, period. If they aren't performing, they should be re-trained or whatever just like they do for men. Luckily my job evaluates me every year and my performance to see if I get a raise or not.

So all workers regardless of productivity should be paid the same? No all men get “retrained” like u said. Thats why theres pay gaps among men as well for same position also

Theres a benefit to no one being screwed there... but it can also be a motivation killer i think. Why should I bust my ass to negotiate a raise if others dont have same level of motivation and a boss wont raise the standard pay just because of me?

some ppl are much harder workers than other and produce way more than others. I dont think its that simple

unless u push for more unions... than productivity is no longer a factor in pay... u either keep ur job or u dont if ur too slow

Theres also the issue of how exactly do u compare equal pay for women specifically? If you have 2 male workers, one experienced guy makes $30/h as welder fitter lets say but another makes$24/h.... what is female equal pay? Is it compared to the highest earner? Lowest earner? Average?

For this to work then the law cant be just equal pay for women, it has to be equal pay for everyone in same position at a company... that has benefits but has downsides also

Seems kind of pointless to be honest.

The wage gap exists for two reasons - Women do the sane thing and generally don't go for extremely high positions that demand 70+ hours of work a week.  That's where the real money is and only some men want to go for those kind of roles.  Women clock onto a fact of life many men miss, once you have enough money to sustain yourself and enjoy yourself, extra money and more work is not worth it.  The other issue that I have found is that a lot of women tend to be terrified to say "no" or demand a raise. I spoke to my line manager and I told him to retain me that I want more money or I will leave.  We're now in talks with the owner of the company on how to retain me via a raise since he does not want to lose me.  The "problem" is not women, or the law in most western countries, it's actually how we socialise women.

Although, like I said... closing the "wage gap" is more a case of finding women willing to sacrifice their entire lives to their careers like a few mad men would.
