Spice World - an underrated gem

Spice World, the movie, turned 20 at the end of last year and its a film that really defined my childhood, being seven when it came out and having the girls as my first ever faves. The film was strangely misunderstood when it was initially released, probably because it involved female popstars as the leads and what could they provide other than frivolous trash, right? Never mind that The Beatles did the same idea 33 years before with A Hard Day's Night and that got critical acclaim and is still well-regarded today. It's shocking how an inherent sexism made critics, despite all their hard work they put into their film degree, not recognise, you know...satire, parody, spoof comedy. It really proves that sometimes, even the critics don't have a clue and have biases to bear, so why should we listen to them? Spice World was hardly a masterpiece but what it was meant to be - a send up of life as a popstar in the 90's, it achieved amazingly. I mean, come on, my mum, who always disapproved of my like of the Spice Girls, reluctantly took me to the cinema to see it back in the day, fully expecting to hate it and came out thinking it was surprisingly ok. The girls deal with all the hang ups of celebrity life - overbearing managers, forced into performances they don't want to do, being stereotyped to fit their curated image, being torn down by corrupt newspaper editors. And they do all this without a love interest entering the equation. Groundbreaking for its time.

The whole thing's available to watch online for free, so whether you've never seen it or not (or only have it on VHS, like I do), check it out again and see what you think.

And the quotes are something else. I have endless favourites, especially from Clifford, the tragic mess of a manager, and the record label chief, played by Roger Moore ironically in Bond villain mode. Every time a popstar starts getting hit with a scandal, I always recall Clifford saying "Here we go, backlash has started" and the Chief responding with "When the speeding melon hits the wall, it is Christmas for the crows." Share some of your favourites here:

"They're hot, Chief. They've got fire in their eyes, hunger in their bellies and great big shoes on their feet!"

"They should be on another show. Or in a zoo."

"Your mother! Your big, fat mother! And your brother in law! And your mad cousin! And your next door neighbour's goat!"

"Rock n roll is staying up all night, getting completely off your face and throwing television sets out of hotel windows. I don't remember any mention of boats."

And that entire early labour scene on the Spice bus. Just one zinger after another, especially the "bit late to keep her legs closed, she should've done that 9 months ago" gag!
