(No, Gaga is never not random, but just go with it.) She literally threw herself, and her brand of queer art-pop, into the Super Bowl. She released a documentary on Netflix about the dramatic lead-up to that performance and the emotional recording process for her most recent album Joanne. And she filled in for Beyoncé at Coachella when the singer’s forthcoming twins prevented her from performing. It says a lot that it was her they thought could suitably replace and fulfil Beyoncé’s spot. The fact she then pulled it off perfectly only will help Gaga establish herself as a trusted performer and a legacy artist in future, and will certainly help her media portrayal. They’re saying she had a pretty random year, her surprise last minute filling in for Beyoncé fits that narrative a lot better than just saying she performed.
