Was there a 2013 smear campaign against Gaga?

That's just how the media works tbh. It's pretty terrible. Gaga's pointed this out to. The world loves to watch the rise and fall of an artist. They love to build a star up until they're on top of the world, then pull the sheet out from under their feet.

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

I really like this interview in particular though. Gaga is very poised and deflects the interviewers strategic negativity. It's like a silent battle between two very smart women, and I think Gaga won her respect at the end.

Its so weird because it seemed like she knew the "smear campaign" was coming when she released ARTPOP. There are lyrics in the album that seemed to foreshadow the criticism and events that would follow proceeding the album release.

It fascinates me... Did she know it was coming and have a certain intuition? was it purely coincidental? did she plan it? did Troy organize it? Personally, I believe she knew it was coming. I love a good conspiracy theory!

Exactly, from the beginning she knew it was not going to be successful. The album was made for her fans. All throughout the album, she gives hints that she knows it's not going to be successful and she's only waiting for the support of her fans.

"I try to sell myself but I'm just really laughing because I just love the music not the bling"
"I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong to crash the critics saying is it right or is it wrong ?"
"I don't need to be on top to know I'm worth it cause I'm strong enough to know the truth"
"Don't want your money want your love"
"You can't have my heart and you won't use my mind but do what you want with my body"

Yeah agreeing with some people here, 2013 was kind of the time where it was cool to hate on Gaga for being Gaga. I believe people's expectations for Gaga's next album after BTW were either soaring higher than the f**king sun or deep down because there were mixed reactions for BTW (some people said it was really really weird, others said it was reductive of Madonna's work, etc.) I mean hell there was even the infamous interview where Madonna called Gaga reductive because BTW sounded similar to Express Yourself.
Then Gaga's team and Gaga herself poorly managed the production of ARTPOP because a lot of them were leaving, she was still recovering from her hip and was pretty damn hooked on the Mary Jane :trollga:

So I believe when DWUW got released, people were having kind of the same mixed reviews on some tracks from BTW like "oh so this is where gaga is going well wtf is this its catchy but its weird"

People just wanted to hear more songs that were similar to TFM's kind of style, if that makes any sense, since it seems like EVERYONE who isn't a LM wants to hear more f**king FM (who wouldn't :lolga: )

Anyways, my point is I believe people got let down by ARTPOP because they expected a lot more from Gaga instead of HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (Aka Aura) and SWWWWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE

You know when she said she studied the art of fame? Maybe she knew she had to have a flop album to become an underdog again.

Who is this person?

I wasn’t around back then and I’m so fascinated by what happened in this era.

I think even if the media was coming for Gaga, it was a way for her to rebirth herself, like how oysters need to get sand and be in pain with it to make a beautiful pearl. Conspiracy or not, it did wonders to her, and now she's Stronger.mp3

Also, it's strange how Gaga got to foreshadow the hate and backlash she got from the media and from what she thought as a friend during all of her eras(pre-CTC). The Fame era was the Paparazzi video, for The Fame Monster was the Monster Ball 2.0 Paparazzi performance, for Born This Way was her dialogue before Judas plays during the BTWB (and probably the whole song itself), and for ARTPOP was Do What U Want, and that Gaga is Over video. She knew it was coming :gum:

I feel like it was cumulation of people who always resented her for various stupid reasons finally getting their digs in, and a media culture that hates women finally getting a new female star to tear down. She was vulnerable and they happily went for it. It's a story as old as time.

What I always found it weird is that Interscope didn't do anything to dispute the $25 million dollar slander, and just let it spread. They were so useless at the time. I remember reading a magazine article about Lana a year later, and the journalist mentioned Interscope stepping in and asking them to erase a portion of the interview, so it's not as if they didn't throw their weight around for their artists. It's a completely different story now with how they pushed hard to get her at the Superbowl Halftime show, singing her praises to media outlets, and buying her horses etc, but I always wonder why they didn't do anything back then to protect her image.

I've been reading about Mariah Carey recently and about her breakdown in 2001 and there are so many similarities to Gaga's career breakdown in 2013.

1. They were having label/artist conflict. Mariah's divorce from Tommy happened 4 years before, but that certainly was an important factor as he built up her career and since he was the CEO of Sony (Mariah's label at the time). Gaga was having conflict with Interscope as she was given less freedom with her work and they promoted ARTPOP a lot less than her other albums.

EDIT: Mariah had just signed a $100 million contract with Virgin Records and after her breakdown, they bought out the contract.

2. They were having issues with their management. Mariah was working overtime and not taking care of herself, and yet her management never took the time to tell her to slow down or take a breather. Gaga, obviously, had the whole Troy situation.

3. The albums they worked on/released received less praise than anticipated. Mariah released the "Glitter" soundtrack, and we all know what happened with that. Gaga released ARTPOP and it was a polarizing album for fans and critics as it was a new direction for her.

If anyone is still reading this, I just hope that Gaga gets her "Emancipation of Mimi"-style comeback with LG6. Perhaps "The Emancipation of Stefani"?:sis:

Sound like a joke but it's pretty true that it was a whole conspiracy agaisn't Gaga in 2013.

First of all, people were already tearing her down in 2012. But the thing is, back in 2012, she was touring and really didn't care about what they were saying. That's when the stuff started to scalate really really fast.

It started with her weight...then it was "song about princess diana without suicidal message for young audience", then it was "lady gaga addict" and stuff just went Mad. When she cancelled in 2013, you can see that people didn't care but the media itself didn't even cover the fact the woman broke her hip. It was more likely..."whatever".

When the album campaign kicked off, it was just hate coming out of everywhere cuz it was cool. And, in my mind, the biggest fault out of all of this is stan culture itself. Suddenly it was every fanbase possible agaisn't Gaga. Media in general have been really...interested about what the "young audience is searching for". Suddenly they check twitter and the trend right now is to call "ARTFLOP" and "Lady Fadga"... bam. They want the clicks. And that's really what happened I mean how many random rumors didn't come out of nowhere like ARTPOP album giving Interscope over 25 million debit ???

To an extent yes, but it’s pretty much the same thing that’s happening to katy now.

Also, there’s no real need to speculate. Buzzfeed did a really good expose about Angela Cheng—that fake journalist who made up ridiculous gaga rumors that always picked up a lot of steam (like inter scopes $25 million loss on ARTPOP)

I love how some of Gaga's best moments came right after her split with Troy Carter: Cheek To Cheek, Oscars, SuperBowl Performances, Joanne and now ASIB and Vegas. Too many great moments for a "fad" and a "flop" artist.

He must be regretting leaving her, just like LA Reid when he dropped her.
