Apple confirms slowing down iPhones

Apple statement : 

"Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices. Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.

Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future."

"In terms of battery chemistry, there’s nothing wrong with this approach. Lithium-ion batteries do degrade over time, the amount of power stored does drop, and the peak current does drop. These are not unknown problems for smartphone manufacturers to deal with, so this isn’t a crime, no matter how angry this will make many consumers feel (especially if they decided to buy a brand new handset rather than Apple’s $79 battery replacement service).

But to draw inspiration from Watergate, the problem is never the degradation, the problem is the cover-up. Apple implemented this feature in 2016, but I’ve not seen any coverage from Apple informing customers that it was degrading the performance of their own phone. For me the biggest issue is Apple deciding to obscure the issue and the solution.

Why not advertise this protective ability? Following the incendiary issues with the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung stopped production on the tablet, conducted a thorough investigation and published its ‘Eight Point Battery Check’. What is wrong in promoting a feature that extends the working life of your iPhone? Why should Apple’s software get to make the decision of performance over endurance?

How difficult is a subtle message asking the user to consider installing a new battery if performance is key? And let’s not forget that Apple has implemented this for iPhone 7 users, a phone that was announced just over fourteen months ago and arguably was still Apple’s leading smartphone just four months ago. Can Apple really not guarantee battery performance for that length of time?

First a messy iOS 11 release filled with bugs (now its way better with iOS 11.2 thank god) but 11.2 is currently slowing down my iPhone 7? oh hell no  imagine all the people that purchased new phones bc of this  thanks for the transparency apple

I mean it’s reasonable lol, everyone will read this as Apple scamming customers but the type of batteries iPhones use really age poorly and if your phone keeps rattling on full power you will lose life expectancy.

We love the iPhone 7, a 14 months old 800 to 1000$ (or more in some countries) device that gets slowed down without anyone telling us

I’d rather my phone slowed down after 3 years than it crash regularly

I’d rather know and spend 80$ for a new battery than spend 1000$ on a new phone thinking my phone’s finished bc its laggy when in fact it might be only a battery issue, but thats just me maybe? And yeah for the 3 years for iphones 6, but 14 months for iPhones 7? i mean sure batteries degrade but i’d expect something better from Apple as they claim theyre top quality  

If Apple doesnt see a problem with doing this i  think they should have told people the second they were doing it. they only did tell it bc someone exposed them. How many people i have heard saying « im going to change my iphone its been two years and its laggy » when maybe a 80$ battery replacement would have fixed some things?  

Anyway feel free to disagree with me, world would be boring if everyone would have the same opinions

I have an iphone 7, bought it in december of last year and it’s already acting up. My headphones are barely working, I used to have this problem that whenever I used them voice control would pop up even if disabled out of the blue and it would make listening to music nearly impossible, now it seems to be fine again out of the blue, but the phone keeps freezing for a few seconds now and then. I have not updated my iOS yet and idk if I should. I don’t wanna switch up to another company, I really love the simple yet attractive layout of this phone’s program and also the design of the phone itself. Maybe it’s superficial that those are the only reasons why I have an iphone and not because I care about performance and everything else but it’s the truth. I wanna enjoy being on my phone.

heaphones can be changed at apple store if it hasnt been 1 year yet ! as for ur iphone what u should do is a backup on itunes than archive it then update ur device and if its not any better simply restore the phone and erase it and back up from your saved archived version!
