<333 Maybe for the next era we will go back to professionaly directed music videos. I'm not saying that i didn't love Gaga's own team directing it because I happened to love Judas, YAI, BTW, and MTN!

I actually think Marry the Night was very poorly edited and the execution of her concept was done poorly as well.

It wasn't cohesive and it seemed very amateurish but with a professional camera.

She's really not a great director. Her career is still too young for her to afford to kill a music video like that.

I think her editing is actually quite good. For starters, she demonstrates an ability to maintain spatial coherence while editing a dance routine--something not a lot of music video editors demonstrate. You don't lose a move of the choreography. She demonstrates her ability to know when to cut rhythmically (turn head, car explodes, edited to beat=great effect), and yet she's not a slave to rhythmic editing, which, again, is about the only thing most other music videos are willing to try. And she even includes some fantastic tonal montage, in which she purposely mirrors and parallels shot compositions to create thematic points. Bytch knows her cinematic grammar. MTN is much better directed and certainly more richly directed than some of her efforts with so-called "professionals."

What exactly seemed amateurish about it?

I think the editing is a mess and and the dialogue is asinine.

With good editing you understand why certain shots are included. I thought a lot of the video was pretentiously excessive. For instance, the scenes of her in the dance studio are too long and don't flow with the energy of the music.

The choreography is lacking for a song thats such a club banger, especially towards the end of the video.

Plus her acting is pretty laughable.

I really like the song but I think the video is a highly pretentious 14 minute monstrosity.

I'd rather have a 5 minute professionally directed video thats not as "rich" than a 14 minute long unnecessarily excessive product of narcissism.

If Beyonce is not in it than no thanks, it will ruin it.

Maybe she'll complete the trilogy

It would be interesting to see the continuation. Because gaga said herself that she hated ye telephone video. She would Probably be heavily involved in this one, unlike telephone where she apparety didn't have as much say

She had TOO MUCH say in the Telephone video and nobody edited her, which is why it's just a confusing mess.

What is exactly wrong with 'Telephone' and why does she hate it (where did she say she hated it)?

At face value, it is fine, but the alleged metaphor was lost entirely.

I think MTN is one of her best videos in terms of art/concept - but the editing wasn't perfect. There are errors - cameras a visible in certain parts, as is a crew member. The first half is better in terms of it's editing than the second half. The car/fire/roof top scene to me needed to be looked at more closely. It's a little rough, there's a minor pause when she slides down the car and at times, the fire has not been edited into the shot which annoys me.

I love the dance sequence; it's perfect. In the past I've though there was too much of it but it's the choreography to MTN. I always get so pissed when the choreography is ignored - so I'm happy we got to see it all. But the end dance sequence needed focusing on tbh. It was ignored and it was visually awesome so. Anyways, opinions vary. A 14 minute music video was excessive a little self indulgent - but good on her for taking a risk and putting something out the public has not seen for a very long time.

I'm hoping for cleaner music videos in terms of narrative and editing next Era - that don't ignore the choreography.

well, maybe. but i like to think of it as small 'feminine statement'. and really it's nothing more. anyone who wants to find a deep(er) message and/or solve/interpret the metaphor - well... good luck with that.

I completely agree with you. Gaga has fantastic ideas, and they really are brilliant ideas. But when it comes to the actual execution of her ideas, I feel like Gaga needs people there to guide her, in a sense. It's like she tends to get carried away with her ideas until it ends up being a giant convoluted mess that could have been something brilliant if she had someone more experienced to help her out.

Jonas and Gaga work well together, imo. I hope they continue to work together.

In 2010 she said the video was a metaphor for the young people in America who are constantly inundated with advertisements, technology, information, and food. That is why there are so many product placements and food everywhere in the video. The food kills everyone in the Diner and Gaga dances wearing the American flag. Of course, it blatanlty also is a statement about feminism.

In 2011 she said she thought there were too many ideas going on at once and that she should have focused it more.

For those supporting Gaga as a director, may I point you in the direction of the done-by-children camerawork in TEOG & You & I? Thanks.

I actually think her acting is quite good? I post specifically at a film board, and people were roundly impressed with her. Her scene at the hospital is played very well, without her giving over to complete scenery chewing histrionics, and feeling somewhat subdued (which of course plays up the contrast with when she does bring the histrionics, breaking mirrors and showering herself in Cheerios). I think she showed great improvement here from Telephone.

Now, I really can't argue one way or the other over whether it's pretentious or excessive. I don't even know what pretentious means the way most people use it anymore (most seem to mistakenly use it when they simply mean, "I find it too serious"). What kind of pretense exactly is the video laboring under? It's pretty up front and honest about its lofty philosophical aims and French arthouse influences while still maintaining a great sense of humor (mimed bjs, aforementioned Cheerio showers, and comically large metaphorical hats). And having lofty ambition while maintaining a sense of camp sounds like Gaga through and through. And as for excessiveness, all I can say is that there definitely aren't any scenes that don't fit into the puzzle of themes and ideas she's made so, even at 14 minutes, it doesn't feel at all indulgent or excessive to me. It feels like a storyteller knowing what story she wants to tell and setting out to do just that. She indulges her muse, yes, but all great artists should.
