Sales are more valuable than streams

Many here and in other forums are constantly saying, "In 2017 streams are more valuable than sales", "Sales are irrelevant now". But the reality is that they couldn't be more wrong. Sales are still more valuable than streams. If streams were more valuable than sales than we wouldn't have the 1500 streams=1 sale equivalence. It would be something like 10 sales=1 stream. Also, when people actually BUY music, it shows that they care enough about the artist they are buying music from to support them. This, in another way, also shows how a sale is more valuable than a stream. Now, this whole sales/streams confusion comes from the fact that streaming is becoming more and more popular and accessible, which in turns means that the songs with the most streams eventually end up being on top of the charts. But the people saying that streams are more valuable than sales are then choosing the wrong word to describe this scenario. What they actually mean is that streams are a BIG FACTOR to chart success but they are still not more VALUABLE than sales. Finally, music sales me be low in today's market, but there are still enough sales to cause a dent on the charts. Gaga would not have had her high Joanne charting positions without those sales.

Girl they don't mean 1 stream>1 sale. They mean 1B streams and 400k sales>40M streams 1M sales

And to say that buying music means you support an artist more makes no sense. There could be a stan who can't afford to buy their faves album/song so they stream it tons of times. Does that mean they don't care about their fave as much?

That is essentially the same thing I said in my OP.

You said that people think streams are more valuable than sales then used 1500 streams=1 album to prove they are wrong, meaning that you are saying people think 1 stream is more than 1 sale.

Both are equally valuable. But if you had a song with 1B streams and 300k sales compared to a song with 50M streams and 1M, the first song is obviously the bigger song.

Yes I agree. That has to do with the fact that streaming is more accessible now and people prefer to stream songs for free vs paying. Still in the pure sense of the word sales are still more valuable.

Value in what terms? But you can't compare 1 stream to 1 sale
