Domination in worlds largest smartphone market

China is not only the undisputed world's largest  smartphone market,  (with India and USA follows at #2 and #3, respectively),  but also the most unique market in the world. As the market now is dominated by 5 companies, and none of them are Samsung, which is the current world's smartphone leader by sales.

These companies are as listed below:

1.) Huawei, 2.) Xiaomi, 3.) Apple, 4.) Vivo, 5.) Oppo

Kantar reports that, for the calendar quarter ending in October, the top five of Huawei, Xiaomi, Apple, Vivo, and Oppo accounted for 91 percent of the overall market. That’s up from 79 percent a year earlier, extending a lead that now sees companies like ZTE, Meizu, and Lenovo struggling to find a foothold in their home country. Global smartphone leader Samsung is now at a 2.2 percent share in China and deteriorating, according to Kantar’s Dominic Sunnebo.

It’s notable how diverse each company’s strategy for success in China has been. Oppo and Vivo have prioritized rural China, setting up a huge network of brick-and-mortar stores that get their devices out to consumers who might not yet have access to the internet. Xiaomi has been and remains dominant in online sales, though those have fallen as a proportion of phone sales in China owing to the faster growth of physical retail. The major resurgence that Xiaomi has enjoyed over this past year has been down to a new strategy of integrating more real-world stores with its already successful online strategy. Huawei has focused primarily on urban China, and it’s reaped the rewards of it as one of the leading brands. Apple, finally, has maintained its status as a premium luxury brand, a status symbol, and its iPhone X debut is likely to boost its numbers in the next quarter, serving as exactly the aspirational product that many young Chinese consumers are looking for.

I'm SHOOK that Huawei is on top. I didn't think they sold that well. The Nexus 6P was such an amazing device. Haven't used another Huawei since but if everything else is up to par with it, then it's a deserved lead.

China is a very smart country. They do care about local companies becoming big unlike European countries who have simply allowed to take American and Asian products over their markets. As a protectionist country, China has the most intelligent strategy to develop its market. They now have high potential Chinese producers. In the EU, the Eastern European countries are simply being taken over by Western/Central European companies, they sell their products there but there are no Eastern European products in the West....  Before I read this aticle, I never heard of "Oppo" before. The hegemony of samsung and Apple must come to an end! My smartphone is by the way also Chinese, and I'm proud to have a Chinese smartphone.

Smarphones in general only have short shelf life and we must keep updating with new devices every 2-3 years :giggle:

You won't believe I have a Motorola from 2013. The headphone jack doesn't work anymore and it restarts sometimes but I'm still using it.:selena:

Yea, because it is not readily available yet in the Western market. It is having cult following from tech enthusiasts here tbh.

I can relate, when the smartphone era just kicked in, I stayed with Nokia N for few years before I finally retire it cos it cannot do anything anymore. :giggle:
