Economy 52,842
https://www.google.ca/amp/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4420002 Many of us are Guilty for assuming a homeless person ended that way due to substance abuse or poor money management. But sometimes it isnt the case. This woman who was homeless from 2012 to 2016 tells her story: "The end of a relationship, end of a job and then just money running out. And you can't get another place unless you have another job," she told CBC Radio's Metro Morning. "Then you end up in a system I knew nothing about." The Federal Government plans to reduce homelessness by half over next 10 years, something she has issue with: "I don't know where they came up with that idea," she said. "You have to take care of it all." When she was on the verge of losing it all, Passarello says she asked for help from others, including social workers, but got nowhere and no help. "They said to me continuously, 'Until you're homeless, we can't help you anymore,' and I found that very upsetting and shocking," she recalled. "Why can't you keep people in a place where they're at?" She also believes the system is innefective: "It costs the city of Toronto more to keep people in a shelter than to keep people in their apartment," she said. "My rent was $1,500 a month at the time, and I've heard the cost to have individuals in a shelter system is anywhere from $80 to $120 a day." MarryTheAngel 551
Homelessness transverses all walks of life. The proper way to address homelessness is establishing housing firstly. That is the platform to get them off the street. It's not only on the city government however. Society needs to get on board, because in many cases, they reject affordable housing in fear of 'crime and drugs' seeping into their neighborhood because of the homeless. Canada is gonna build 100,000 affordable units over next 10 years to help reduce homelessness But some experts say because housing shortage is so severe its benefits will be limited

I always thought our welfare system and social benefits were good enough that if u used money wisely and werent abusing a substance u wouldnt get homeless in Canada But lately I been reading of individuals where that wasnt the case Also the severe housing shortage and insane house prices and rents are making welfare and assistance insufficient. Its not a surprise homeless is rising Trudeau made a plan to build 100,000 affordable units to help homelessness but given the size of housing market and how severe the housing shortage is i have to question how much it will help Bad time to increase annual immigration by so much like he just did Things are getting bad here in some areas. New homes get built and its a mob to go see it on open house day... a basement goes up for rent and its taken within hours Its actually hard to find a place anywhere. Vacancies are extremely low. I been looking at condo buildings as well 90% of them dont have a single condo or apartment vacant 😳
Pacify Him 9,073
Yeah homelessness in America is perceived as a fault for doing drugs when it’s usually not. i wrote a scene for homework for my screenwriting class and the prof said it’s unrealistic and that I have to include “drug abuse” into it. Dropped out a week later. I’m getting on your nerves

I mean 8/10 homeless i see downtown look drunk or are always smokinng something But my point is there are a few where it isnt the case and when u make assumptions people not at fault may be denied help from reluctant pedestrians

Another note, some homeless people are groomed and they don't get help because they don't "look homeless". It's pretty f-ed up that they can't get help because they either look like a druggie or not actually homeless. The second wasn't directed to you just in case

I'm so out of the loop can you give us a super brief explanation? Basically construction has not kept up with population growth and the increase in immigrants will probably make it even worse Home prices have skyrocketed but home builders didnt build super fast because experts kept warning we could end up having a crash like the US did so home builders were cautious and construction didnt keep up with demand. Some say zoning laws and permits are also too complicated and is slowing construction down The Government has intervened several times to tighten mortgage rules to make it harder to buy a house to cool the market and price increases... They tried lowering max amortizations to 25 years, making downpayment requirements minimum 20% without default insurance, limiting number of mortgages under 20% downpayment that can get insurance, a forein real-estate investors buyers tax, and now a stress test that forces you to qualify for mortgage if interest rates rose 2% Each time it cools the market for a few months as people wait on sidelines to see what happens but the market quickly heats up again. This has been going on for well over a decade In some areas of Country Vacancy rates are as low as under 1%. Rentals go in a day, entire buildings dont have a single room or condo that is vacant much of the times and bidding wars are crazy Some say the rules will never cool the market for the simple fact that theres a severe shortage. The new stress test may cool prices tho as people simply cannot qualify for such large mortgages if the bank has to assume rates will rise 2%
