Why did Lady Gaga call her song "John Wayne" when he was racist?

Gaga isn’t praising the man, she’s praising the persona. John Wayne is a ln American western persona of the ideal man during the mid-twentieth century. Paula Cole asks “where is my John Wayne?” in her song Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?

So, it’s more about what he represented during the time period than the man we now know he was. Much like we can appreciate what certain historical figures represented, not necessarily who they were...

I’m pretty sure that the idea is that she falls for these guys but that she knows they’re terrible for her. It’s another take on Judas, essentially. I mean, if we’re to get pissed at her using John Wayne, her also using the man who famously betrayed Jesus doesn’t paint a very nice image either. But the intent in using them is to say she’s attracted to bad boys; also it’s pop music and in this case the song isn’t super super deep so that metaphor only runs in the shallows rather than the depths lol

Why couldn't she have sang about Michael Landon instead? He's a cowboy daddy too. :saladga:

"Almost definitely" is a complete reach, it could very well be that they were just out for money.

You are almost definitely wrong

Guess we'll never know! That's the interesting thing - based on the facts and knowledge made public, your assumptions are just as good as mine! Now let's get back on topic :)

She also made a song about loving Judas, a man possessed by the Devil who betrayed Jesus Christ who was then crucified. And she's catholic.

She also kills herself in the Judas video as a result of being a betrayer in the story and because she thinks she should stone herself first before anyone else does.

She also kills herself twice in the John Wayne video, representing her knowledge that he was also a terrible person and she was suffering repercussions.

This actually really bothered me when the song came out, but since it seemed like no one else cared I just forgot about it lol

Like others mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't know about his comments.  Many people didn't know

Spoiler

At least this isn't as bad as when she worked with a rapist and a pedophile on Do What U Want......the strangest decision of her entire career honestly; I'm so glad that video never came out :toofunny: working with TWO people who sexually assaulted others on a song about "doing what you want with my body" :toofunny:

Someone is always gonna be offended about something on the internet :awkney:

i mean, it's perfectly reasonable that a POC may be offended by this at first but after you hear the song, it's nbd

It's just a metaphor. Also, the guy died 38 years ago. No need to go all SJW now. Song is a ****ing killer anyway.

Does this logic also apply to Hitler supporters? :spin:
