tomsches 17,365
Hey friends. Since 2017 is almost over and there are no albums scheduled to be released that I am personally interested in, I am going to provide you with my personal review of the best albums of 2017. Feel free to comment on my list or post your own list. Here we go: 1. Björk – Utopia Well, she did it again. Björk shows that she is the mastermind of music of our generation. The album is gorgeous, innovative, full of beautiful lyrics and compositions. A classic in her discography. (PS: yes, I’m one of the sinners who listened to it early) 2. The xx – I see you A different side to the once minimalistic indie pop band. I am glad, Jamie has more influence on this record, because he blissed us with some amazing melodies and a more extrovert album than anything the band has ever produced. 3. Cigarettes After Sex – Cigarettes After Sex I was looking forward to this album for so long. And they didn’t disappoint. They created the soundtrack of a romantic summer. 4. Angus & Julia Stone – Snow I found out about this band only a few months ago and I really like what they did with this album. It’s a nice listen on a rainy autumn day. 5. Feist – Pleasure “Century” is one of the best songs of 2017. The album takes on a more grungy vibe than her more popular songs she released in the past. 6. Lana Del Rey – Lust For Life Another great album by Lana. A bit too long though. There are 4 songs she easily could have got rid of to make it more coherent and to have less fillers. 7. Anna of the North – Lovers Anna of the North managed to bring forth a debut album that will excite you from the start with her synthpop tunes that make you want to dance. 8. Ásgeir – Afterglow The album features more electronic experimentation than his previous endeavours. Stardust and Here comes the wave in are highlights. Unfortunately the album is a bit too slow towards the end. 9. White Sea – Tropical Odds A collection of some very summery songs. However, I am missing a concept. Nevertheless, the beautiful melodies still get half a year after its release. 10. JFDR – Brazil Sounds like Björk’s little sister at times. Quite experimental. “Airborne” and “Destiny is upon us” are the 2 highlights. The rest is great but can get a bit static. 11. The Underground Youth – What kind of dystopian hell hole is this? Sounds like a typical Underground Youth album, just that it’s a bit more melodic. Although the album starts out strong, it gets too monotonous towards the end. I wish they would experiment more with their sound. 12. The War on Drugs – A Deeper Understanding Nice debut album. I like the singer’s voice. Pain is a standout track. The instrumental parts could be shorter. It’s nice background music. 13. Fever Ray – Plunge More upbeat than her 1st album, which I like. None of the songs blew me away like “Keep the streets empty for me” though… 14. SZA – CTRL First of all, the album is good, but I am disappointed with it. I was expecting to get more PBR&B kind of songs like “hiiijack” or “Julia”. I liked the songs on her EPs much more than CTRL. 15. Morrissey – Low in High School A typical Morrissey record that could have been released this year or 10 years ago. Fans won’t be disappointed, I was hoping for some more experimentation. 16. Haim – Something to tell you I mean it’s a nice album, especially to sing along in the car. But it doesn’t have the freshness that “Days are gone had” and I think I only listened to it 4-5 times until I got bored of it. 17. Electric Youth – Breathing Great synth music. I’m just sad that most of the songs are instrumentals. “Still my love” is amazing, so I wish they had released a “proper” album instead. 18. Evanescence – Synthesis It’s on this list, because the songs themselves are good. That being said, I am disappointed, because the album just feels recycled. Some songs don’t sound any different than the original versions, just that there are more violins in them. I was soooo hoping for new songs, but we only got two. And I hope Amy stops screaming for their next record. 19. Sohn – Rennen Nice electronic album. 20. Lorde – Melodrama
