A sensible comment about ARTPOP

We are celebrating the anniversary of pop phenomena ARTPOP and we all know about the backlash when it got released. I was reading Joanne's AV club review and in the comment section I found a sensible comment about ARTPOP! Let's read it!

I think those who dismiss ARTPOP are simply lacking interest in her/actually believe that her intent was doing a "Warholian experiment" (in most cases, with an apparently limited knowledge of pop art themselves)/actually believe Beyonce is an intellectual/actually believe Radiohead is the biggest rock band of the past twenty years. This album is sweet and raw. But ARTPOP was major, subcultural, subversive. Give the world ten years to let go of the "pop star mania" which condemn it to failure and it will be hailed as her unquestionable masterpiece. It's not about being a "little monster", it's about having some goddamn taste in music.

ARTPOP didn't sell like BTW but it was and still an obvious topic in the pop industry.

I don't know, I love ARTPOP because I think it's a great electronic pop record but it definitely was something very different from what she was hyping it to be. The idea of merging art and pop together is great but not the way she did it. Creating pop music about sex and putting it with some visual art references is not merging art and pop. In fact, she totally separated them in a way. It's like pop is the music and art is the visual and I think that was the biggest problem in this project.

An even bigger problem when we barely had any visuals :selena:

I don't agree with the comment, but I appreciate it's effort into analysis.

do think ARTPOP will be talked about in the future, not necessarily as a masterpiece, but more so as a martyr in her career: how an album as "okay" as ARTPOP was involved in a negative feedback loop involving the backlash of Gaga as a persona, mismanagement, depression, etc

3 points in and ready for more

I love ARTPOP (the spirit, the project) for its intention and integrity, but the final result was underwhelming. Gaga wasn"t allowed to do things the way she wanted to and it turned out to be a messy record. I still love it like a part of me, but I can't love the music itself.

ARTPOP as a whole is just what a a perfect album is, 15 tracks, each one telling a story, each one unique, so cohesive, the sound is so colorful,  yes, ARTPOP has a lot of synesthesia for me, ARTPOP was the peak of what Lady Gaga means.

I don't know why, but when I read this, a thought popped in my head saying you saw ARTPOP in the same exact way as Gaga, and it made me smile

lost in limbo

ARTPOP is Gaga's Erotica: overshadowed by scandal, that will in a few years be finally seen as the piece of art it is.

Happy birthday ARTPOP my love

this is the state of grace, this is the worthwhile fight

but... the album truly isn't all that? it has some of her best tracks ever but it's an unifnished and poorly executed excuse of an album. don't act delusional and try it, no one will talk about ARTPOP in the future because it sounded dated when it  got released lmao

ARTPOP is my favorite album of Gaga's, without question. It's her rawest. The one with the most pain in it. She was scared, hurting, dealing with addiction and loss. When you look at the motivation behind the work it feels the most relatable of her work.
