PSA: Billboard Chart Rules Change Next Week

Just a PSA that Billboard Hot 100 charting rules change next week, making it a bit better. 

Songs streamed by those who pay for streaming services will be worth more points than those customers who listen but do not pay for services. 

This will likely result in rap losing a bit of its streaming power. 

 

(When they say 2018, they mean the 2018 Billboard year, which starts next week. It keeps it fair to the whole year's measurements)

 

Beginning in 2018, plays occurring on paid subscription-based services (such as Amazon Music and Apple Music) or on the paid subscription tiers of hybrid paid/ad-supported platforms (such as SoundCloud and Spotify) will be given more weight in chart calculations than those plays on pure ad-supported services (such as YouTube) or on the non-paid tiers of hybrid paid/ad-supported services.

In 2018, Billboard will have multiple weighted tiers of streaming plays for the Hot 100, which take into account paid subscription streams, ad-supported streams, and programmed streams. Streaming, along with all-genre radio airplay and digital songs sales data, make up the three metrics of the Hot 100’s methodology.

What if they made streaming worth less... In general? That would be pretty cool.

Not that this isn't, at least, positive - An indicator that they're trying to balance things out so that streaming isn't f*cking up charts that should be determined by those who are actually PAYING for music they love. Streaming should be worth a fraction of what it is.

Interesting coincidence that Gaga suffers from streaming and Billboard is now taking away streaming's power at the time the song of the decade is about to be released.

Streaming screwed up the Billboard chart, so they are trying to make up for it. Gags, release something now.

This is so good for Gaga and “Joanne” and whatever else she releases because I feel like she gets more listeners through Apple Music and that’s a paid streaming service.

I don't think it will majorly change the charts. Most streaming services have only paid tier. How much of the Spotify free accounts are in the US? Probably not too much to drastically change chart positions.

Well, I'm like one of the only people i know that uses the paid version of Spotify, the others use it free. So if that's any indication I think it can have a considerable effect.
