Why Do People Hate "Dope"?

Both are amazing songs. I love Dope, but just to play devil's advocate, I believe the two main reasons why people don't like Dope is because A) Her vocals sound "weird" and B) the message behind IWBWY is more universal.

Some people think that her vocals sound forced in Dope, and what I mean is that they think she's putting on some sort of accent. I can sort of see that, but at the same time, I think it provides a lot of character.

IWBWY does have a more universal and relatable message, but if I recall, Gaga said that Dope can really be about anything: drugs, losing someone, etc. etc. It's sort of like Million Reasons in the sense that she wrote it about a specific thing/event, but it's a message that can be applied to a lot of different stuff.

I so want to get "my heart would break without you. Might not awake without you" tattooed on me because my heart would break without my monster family. Monsters were there when no one else was. I love you all to the moon and back a few times ♥️

I love you monsters. I'd be unfixably broken without you

Its lower tempo compared to other songs as ryanripley alluded to, and at least personally I cannot at all connect to the message of the song, so it automatically has less import to me.

I really love how passionately she performed IWBWY, but the lyrical content simply wasn't there. Dope has a very beautiful set of lyrics, and I personally love the heavy, analog-sounding synths on it. The way she ends Dope, also... Something about it just makes you want to cry.

Off-topic, but I feel like I might be the only one that would have loved to see Dope get a video... With how theatric and high-budget the videos of the era were, it could have had a very dark, emotional, beautiful visual.

Dope is amazing. I love it. I live for the live performances...

I can understand why people don’t really enjoy it though...but to prefer I Wanna Be With U? :awkney: The lyrics are so basic and cringe. At least Dope, while the vocal style may not be appealing to some, is a beautifully written song.

(Some of) her fans didn't like the vocal style she used for "Dope". Which is also the same reason why some fans also didn't like "Til' it Happens to You". Even though that vocal style could be heard in "Bad Romance", "Dance in the Dark", and "I Want Your Love", ironically two of the songs that I mentioned are fan favorites.

Aren't all three fan favorites? :selena:

Honestly, I don't know anymore lol :poot:

I hear more talk about "Bad Romance" and "Dance in the Dark".

But I do love all the songs that I mentioned on that comment.

I Want Your Love seems pretty liked here especially with all people talking about that disco album.

I love them all too. :poot:

At first I hated Dope because it was a ballad in the middle of an EDM album and kind of ruined the mood of it. I've grown to love it so much, the production is perfect and they did an amazing job on it. The thing is that I have to be in THAT mood to listen to Dope and Til It Happens To You because she does this voice that drags it and sounds very very sad, I don't really enjoy that unless I want to listen to it. Same with Joanne and maybe Angel Down.

I never really cared for the iTunes Festival version but a lot of fans do and that's one of the reasons they hate it I think.

i ADORE the single cover but the song never really did anything for me

i feel like it sort of sticks out among the aggressive electro bops, i've spent so much time bopping and then it suddenly switches to piano notes

Agreed. I like the song all fine and well, but it sticks out like a sore thumb on the album.

I like both songs, but personally, I find IWBWY light years better.
