Miel 15,009
That's super sweet of her. I thought he was autistic, though, not mentally ill? Granted, I don't know the full story. Again, very nice of her, and that video still makes me cry 3 points in and ready for more

Genuinely not sure People with autism are likely not to like being considered mentally ill specifically because they are autistic. The term is neuroatypical (versus neurotypical for those without autism); in this way they can request to be treated with respect, and spread understanding that their brains are simply wired slightly differently from other people's without calling into question their equality or worth as human beings. 俺の勝利は揺るぎない

There's a difference between calling an Autistic person mentally ill and calling Autism itself a mental illness. Jaume 1,282
I was in NY last week. I saw a lot of homeless in Manhattan and a lot of them are poor people who suffer from addictions and mental illness. A lot of them have mental illness: schizophrenia most of them. the problem ain't the mental illness, it's the lack of a public health care system. it's awful that if you are poor you don't have access to the health system. pedrohemg 7,802
But his "mental issue" is pretty visible to be honest. You can see he's different. So I'm not sure if her tweet applies to him.

Thanks for the explanation! Yeah, I personally don't categorize autism as a mental illness, but I just assumed (based on what others have said on here last month) that boy has autism, and not anything else that can categorized as mental illness. Fair's fair. 4 minutes ago, Jaume said: I was in NY last week. I saw a lot of homeless in Manhattan and a lot of them are poor people who suffer from addictions and mental illness. I agree. The public health care system in the US is really tense, in that it's not accessible enough to those without the monetary resources to afford it. Obamacare/ACA was a step in the right direction- not perfect, but a step- and we all know how the administration is working against that. In the context of high mental illness rates amongst homeless populations, it is definitely something that is unfortunately looked over. 3 points in and ready for more
