Nationalism is on the rise in the West at the moment. However, this issue between Catalonia and Spain is much older but I think one could argue the rising nationalist atmosphere could have given it a push. Like in here 1947 partition Britain divided us based on religion. Then it didn't go in the right way.. We used to be East Pakistan, our culture and language didn't match. The East Pakistan/Bengal union with Pakistan has to be one of the stupidest things Britain did with their former colonies besides letting the 13 Colonies have a shot at independence. I didn’t say Catalonia is doing this solely because of nationalism. I said the current political climate of the West favors this type of action more than when it was more liberal.
