Melech 9,900 Posted October 27, 2017 Share Posted October 27, 2017 Catalonia’s parliament has voted overwhelmingly in favour of independence from Spain even as the Spanish authorities prepared to take direct control of the powerful and wealthy region. Deputies in the regional assembly backed the motion for secession by 70 to 10 in a momentous decision that escalates the biggest political crisis since Spain’s return to democracy in the 1970s. The motion read: “We shall constitute the Catalan Republic as an independent, and sovereign, democratic and social state of law.” The result was greeted with jubilation by pro-independence supporters who had gathered outside the parliament in Barcelona. But Madrid is already preparing to activate a direct rule provision in the Spanish constitution, which could immediately follow a Catalan declaration of independence. Tens of thousands of pro-independence protesters are scheduled to gather in Barcelona at midday under the slogan “Let's make the Republic”, hoping to put pressure on the parliament to act. A declaration of independence is the dream for many secessionists who have been fighting for decades for the creation of a new state. Any declaration made on Friday, however, would be largely symbolic. It is deemed illegal under Spanish law and will not be recognised by the Spanish government or the wider international community. Any acts passed by this parliament are also likely to be short lived. Senators in Madrid are on Friday afternoon expected to ratify the measures to remove Catalonia’s pro-independence government from office and run the region from Madrid. Its interesting to see countries splitting along ethnic/cultural and economic divides like this, and I have to wonder what that means for other countries. Peacefully formed multi-ethnic/multi-cultural states like the Commonwealth of Poland-Lithuania used to be viable, but it increasingly seems that each ethnicity wants to govern its own independent nation(note that I'm not suggesting ethnicity is the only reason for the Catalonian independence movement). 🤔 I'm talkin' 'bout forever, baby.
