I'm a linguist. I'm not uneducated on the subject. 

Garden and jardin have a similar etymology. A 'frozen' form is a borrowing (although with phonological changes to match the phoneme inventory and phonotactics of the borrowing language). A borrowing has its origins in one language but becomes a valid word in another language; otherwise oeuvre would make no sense, like using cochon or attraper would in English.
