That could be. I was mostly confined to touristy areas, so maybe it was mostly visitors wearing those types of clothing.

If someone were to visit only New York, they would definitely think whites are a minority. I can see that.

It’s a culture. You know why hijab is worn, niqab has similar reasons, depends on scholar’s interpretations and different schools of thought. It’s not scary at all.

I don’t know honestly. I’m not one to judge for their clothing choice, but I agree it was kind of jarring to see someone wear a burqa for the first time. Maybe it’s just because it was so unfamiliar to me and growing up in the US during the 90s and 2000s we were kind of taught to be afraid of the Middle East, at least in my area / schools.

Circumstance as well. Maybe there was a guided tour from Saudi Arabia visiting the same day, who knows honestly. 

I do agree it’s probably a very small minority of women living in Switzerland (and in Quebec) who actually wear the burqa/niqab. I think governments can spend time and money on other things that would prove more useful than a burqa ban. I just don’t feel like it’s really a threat to anyone.

Here’s view of one American niqabi woman 

 

She still loves America because of it’s values. 

I think this law wouldn’t be a thing over there, despite some people being afraid or even hateful. It’s all about communication.

It's fairly common over here in Philly.

I'm from the Middle East too. Is it weird that I find the niqab is equally common among a Muslim-majority country and a non-Muslim majority one? 

OT: I completely agree with this law...but they better consistently apply this law to everyone and not just Muslim women

I just want to give context to this for people who are not from Québec. We have been very clear about our intention to keep public services free of religious signs since the 60's. This is not double sided. It applies to christian beliefs as well. Historicaly, Québec used to be an extremely religious province because the the Church helped protect the francophone people against an english gouvernment that wanted to see them disapear, basicaly. Then the Church took too much place in the public and political spheres to the point were it became dangerous and kept the province from going forward so francophones rejected their presence in the 60's (Révolution tranquille). That means Québecois are very sensitive to religion in public spheres. It is forbidden to display crosses or any other religious signs in hospitals or schools, for exemple. That being said, I don't think that the new law is completly fair. Public transit is too much and I have seen max 2 women wearing burkas in my life. Keep in mind, this is just to give context as it is much differents here than in the States.We are generaly inclusive altough we doo have a bunch of racist people like everywere else. I just want you to understand were this might be coming from.

Ive seen it a few times. Its not that common tho. The partial covering is the one 99% of the muslim women i see use
