Quebec bans face coverings in public services

A new law that would effectively force Muslim women who wear a niqab or burka to uncover their faces to use public services is based on a principle "the vast majority of Canadians, and not just Quebecers" can agree on, Premier Philippe Couillard said.

The Liberal government's Bill 62 on religious neutrality was passed Wednesday in Quebec's National Assembly. 

"We are just saying that for reasons linked to communication, identification and safety, public services should be given and received with an open face," Couillard told reporters.

"We are in a free and democratic society. You speak to me, I should see your face, and you should see mine. It's as simple as that." 

The law prohibits public workers — including doctors, teachers and daycare employees — as well as those receiving a service from the government from covering their faces. 

It was extended to municipal services, including public transit, in an amendment made in August. 

The Liberals, who hold a majority in provincial parliament, voted in favour of the bill, while all the other parties voted against.

If a woman herself consents to wearing a veil, I don't see how the government has any right to tell them what to do with their bodies.

I never have in the US. Only the hijab.

I saw it a ton in Switzerland.

I live in Canada, and I can tell you in my life I've maybe seen people wear Burqas maybe 3 times? Its very rare

You know, it depends on the neighborhood. I’m sure you have places in Lebanon where some women wear it. 

 

Also people saying they haven’t seen it in the US, it’s a huge country, did you go through every city, town and neighborhood? They do exist, but they are minority.

I’m pretty sure it’s not widespread in Switzerland, you just happen to visit a place/town with more Muslims/immigrants from certain areas (like Bangladesh, Yemen, Pakistan etc). 

 

I know one guy from Southern Europe, not sure which city he visited in the US, but he was totally convinced that white people are now minority in America.

sis i know it's not a mythical object. i'm not questioning its existence. i'm just interested to see how frequently people saw them themselves.

Honestly the hijab is fine but the burqa is scary. Why would anyone wanna cover their faces?
