In what could be its worst storm in 56 years, a woman in her 50s died when her car was struck by a falling tree as she was driving near Aglish in Waterford, while a man in his 30s was killed in a chainsaw accident as he tried to remove a fallen tree in Cahir, County Tipperary. Meanwhile a man died when a tree fell on a car in Ravensdale, Dundalk. Several airbourne flights were forced to land after passengers and crew reported 'smoke smells' inside the cabin, which carriers British Airways, Easyjet and Auringy all confirmed were linked to the weather. Gusts of up to 97mph hit Roche's Point Lighthouse in Cork as Ireland's schools closed early, flights were grounded and bridges were shut, while fears were raised that flooding could hit parts of western England and Wales today. Troops were placed on standby in Ireland and many public services closed amid fears about the impact of winds. Elsewhere there were 1,300 customers without power in Northern Ireland and another 200 in Wales. Images in Manchester showed serious damage caused outside shops in the city's Northern Quarter area, shop facades coming off and smashing down onto the crowded streets. Now it makes sense. I'm just outside London, it was so weird! Like dark red and orange, a bit like an eclipse. All the birds stopped singing and disappeared! We rarely get severe weather in Ireland, so these winds are terrifying. So many businesses closed, and we all got sent home from work. It's a red weather warning issued by the government, meaning any non-essential travel is to be avoided at all costs. All the birds stopped singing and disappeared! Same here! Im about 30 mins from kings cross, so no wind but had the weird visibility, at around 3/3:30pm was when the dust was at its worse. Looking outside at the creamy/yellow sky really messed with my eyes being in a florescent lit office, there was no distinction between the light inside and the light outside at one point. I hope people are safe. It feels strange there being this sort of weather over here, last I knew we weren't meant to get hurricanes Not the bore worms! I've got my mum and my boyfriend promising me they won't leave the house and I won't let my housemates go to the shop. Hopefully it'll ease off soon, so much damage been caused so far, loads of trees down on roads and reports of property damage are really starting to rise now. SamJ 8,008 Posted October 16, 2017 Share Posted October 16, 2017 The sun was blood red here for about 2 hours i had the day off work and went shopping and everyone in the street was just standing looking at the sky for ages, it felt like the world was ending! My fence panel has blown down in the garden but apart from that everything seems okay here we're getting 60mph winds at the moment hope it doesnt get too bad.
