Is Meryl Streep Lying?

News of Harvey Weinstein's behavior has rocked pop culture. But apparently his misconduct has long been the subject of whispers in Hollywood. Well today, actresses who work with Harvey have begun to speak out, one of them being Meryl Streep.

She's very quick to try and clear her name of any wrong doing, she states (meaning knowing about it and not doing anything):

"One thing can be clarified. Not everybody knew. Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally. I didn’t know about these other offenses: I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts.

 

She even tries to say this to support her stance of not knowing, but it actually doesn't sound logical: 

if everybody knew, I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it.

 

The interesting thing is that Meryl denied even hearing the rumors about it, but other actresses have owned up to knowing about the rumors. 

 

Glenn Close says:

I’m sitting here, deeply upset, acknowledging to myself that, yes, for many years, I have been aware of the vague rumors that Harvey Weinstein had a pattern of behaving inappropriately around women

 

One commenter on the news article said:

I love Meryl Streep, and I'll side with her in basically anything. But all that acting talent could ever convince me she wasn't aware of what was happening - that she at least didn't hear a rumor here and there about his behavior

 

So do you think Meryl is lying?

Probably. But I think this is more important:

Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Judi Dench, Glenn Close all condemned Weinstein. Men who've worked w/ him? Nothing. Direct your attention to the men who literally helped cover up for Weinstein and leave these women alone.

He owns Weinstein Company, you'll their logo often if you watches movies at cinema. 

They make a lot of movies, many of them you and all of us have watched.

Yes, because he was an important figure and a man of power and according to society women are always lying when it comes to rape/sexual harassment accusations. Nothing new.

For the record, this thread was created after I read an article about Meryl's comments. It's not that I'm ignoring men like Matt Damon and Russel Crowe who tried covering this up in 2004 for Harvey (disgusted by both). I'd gladly make 100 threads about them. But also, I believe Meryl is in a position that is much more powerful than many men in Hollywood, so I think focusing on her as a person and not on her sex, is important too.
