Theresa May handed resignation during disastrous Tory Conference Speech

Theresa May had to battle losing her voice and being interrupted on stage by a comedian as she sought to reassert her Conservative leadership.

Mrs May, who at one point was handed a throat sweet by the chancellor, did make it to the end of a speech in which she vowed to "renew the British dream". She announced plans for more council houses and a cap on energy prices but they were overshadowed by the problems she had delivering the set-piece speech in Manchester.

BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said the annual conference "was meant to be about restoring Theresa May's authority - it may prove instead to have been further undermined". Mrs May was interrupted early on in her speech by comedian Simon Brodkin - also known as Lee Nelson - who managed to make it to the podium to hand her a P45, a redundancy notice, saying to her that "Boris asked me to give you this".

After he was removed and she got encouraging cheers from the audience she joked that the only P45 she wanted to give out was to Jeremy Corbyn but she struggled to finish the speech because of a croaky voice, having to stop several times to drink water. Sources close to the prime minister have said that the PM had caught the "conference cold", and that her many interviews and meetings this week have taken their toll on her voice.

To add to her woes, some of the letters fell off the conference stage backdrop. By the end it read: "Building a country that works or everyon." There has never been a speech quite like it. Even before she took to the platform Theresa May was fragile - politically, and in terms of her health, she has been struggling with a cold all week. 

The awkwardness of watching her cough her way through what was meant to be a fightback was intense, at moments it felt like it would be impossible for the prime minister to carry on with the speech, but she made it, just. But for how long can she continue in her job?

We've been lucky to have a string of "liberal" conservative leaders that balance out the party a little, they were the ones that legalised gay marriage after all. I'd hate to think what the country would be like if we had a "classic" conservative leader like that creep Rees-Mogg.

but i wished she would've handled this whole brexit situation differently (why couldnt they just ignore the referendum ) 

tbh i believe a new referendum is justified. no one back then knew what it meant to leave the EU and as we know now - not even the UK government was prepared for what would happen afterwards (x1 000 000).

She's the sacrificial lamb, no matter what outcome Brexit has... whoever the Prime Minister is through it takes the blame for every bump and problem hence why not many conservatives threw their names into the hat.  The conservatives promised a referendum to cling onto power, if they didn't honour the results then they would be over.

Another referendum would keep us in the E.U. since we would probably have three choices on the ballet, which I'm unsure about. If we had another referendum, stayed in the EU and Labour won the next election then I would have faith but I think we need to leave and have the conservatives f*ck the poor up some more so Labour wins.

Basically, I don't really mind what we do with the EU. I'd prefer to stay in and keep the "special rules" we had but I just need Jeremy Corbyn to have a run as Prime Minister as I believe he'll be the saving grace of British Politics.

But for Article 50 to be reversed would require unanimous approval of EU memberstates. I could see a country like France veto'ing. Also, the UK would lose all of its special status in the EU (no more 'opt out' from Schengen, financial contributions and Eurozone membership), without which it would be very difficult to re-enter without vetos from many countries. That makes it difficult for even Third Way Labour to support renewed/continued EU membership. 

 

I think the best thing for the world would be for the UK to set an example of how not to do it. Every time the UK comes in the news negatively in continental Europe makes EU survival more likely on the long term. You can rejoin in like 10 years probably.. just continue to show the rest of the EU that leaving the EU makes your country a shitfest.

I don't know who told you that but you're misinformed. The truth is, we don't actually know what would happen if the UK changes it's stance and wishes to remain but it's unlikely it would fall to a vote since someone would veto it (France is unlikely to veto however) and pushing the UK out if no agreement was reached would be a catastrophe for the EU and the UK.

So far, we're doing fine and I have faith we will continue to do fine without the EU. Would have preferred to stay but I'm fine with leaving since I was sceptical anyway. The EU in it's current form is not the future, if Brexit helps it get to where it needs to be then good, I wish you all the best of luck!
