What is the Most Iconic Flop Album of All Time?

Glitter.

It was iconic and often referenced and really a fall from grace. Mimi was once considered infallible with her music career. Idk if it sold well but for Mariah's standard it was a huge underpeformance.

It was 28 million that Virgin paid her by invoking a clause to 'cancel' the contract. The official press release said 'terminate', Mariah's camp sued and called the label "deplorable", and then Virgin countersued for defamation. A giant mess. :smh:

And where is Virgin Records now? :reductive:

Spoiler

I know it's still a record label in the UK but not the states :selena:

Is the glitter era consider a flop solely for the movie tanking or for the album as well? If we are being fair, the album (while a low number for Mariah) sold more than 500,000 copies in the US. The movie (meanwhile) made back less than 1/4 of its budget. Is the album just a flop when compared to her other albums?

Both. And 500k might sound like a lot nowadays, but back then (and especially for someone of Mariah's caliber) 500k is like 10k :rip:

Babel

Those who overlook Glitter are too young or don't know their pop history very well. It was a disaster that led Mariah into a breakdown almost as bad as Britney's.

There was also Two the Hard Way, by Greg Allman and Cher (1977), which was known for being pretty dang awful, and Cher bought the rights to the album and its master tapes so it can never be re-released in any way ever again.

Again dodging the question by dropping 'iconicity', there was Paris Hilton's album, as well as Superficial by Heidi Montag.

Good Point. Plus, her follow up to Glitter (Charmbracelet) had no hit single and yet still managed to sell over 1,000,000 copies in the US. I guess I just always think of the Glitter movie when I think of that flop era.

The movie is pretty awful tbh...

Yeah it's pretty crazy to read about old flop albums and see their sale numbers. Like "huge commercial under performance and only sold 5 million worldwide" :laughga:

And I never watched the movie until like a year ago. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting (especially for the hate that it got) but it definitely wasn't great. The soundtrack is growing on me though. I just started listening to it this past year.
