Bodak Yellow is overrated

Such a mess, fam :toofunny:

First of all, Rap and Hip Hop have always and will always be more popular in USA. And it does not mean overrated, it just how the nation taste is. I mean, USA is the birth place of rap/hip hop, it will always a place here. Many popular rap artists started to get famous first at home before they are marketed overseas. The pioneers of the genre have built this since the 70s and it finally reached mainstream in the 80s and they have done well. And pretty sure Cardi B will be marketed overseas soon as well with all this exposure.

Secondly, Bodak Yellow is not overrated, she did well with he rap, her flow are fine. The beats are fire. And it's not gimmicky. And I, for one, glad a pure rap track actually hit #1 again. And there is no featuring too. It;s been awhile since Lauryn Hill did that in 1998.

Overrated always used as an attack when someone dislike something or someone. And often times, the accusation couldn't be far from the truth.

She isn't and as a black person, I find it very offensive that people keep calling her black when she isn't. And please do not tell me that she is "mixed" or "biracial", those qualities do not make a person black.

Ok I'm editing it, but I don't think it's necessary to take too much offence to it because plenty of mixed people still identify as 'black'.  Now that's up to you and them to discuss, and I don't know how Cardi B identifies herself, but for your sake I'm changing it.

Well I can't really say I hate hip hop, I mean do like quite a few, especially the older ones. And I don't think I can't even say I think the song is terrible. It's just over-glorified imo; the lyrics and the beat are so generic, and yet people just suck it up. But yeah, mostly people like me form personal preferences not just on the song itself, but on the context of it.

Yeah. This song is literal garbage. The way its "rapped," the lyrics. I hate it. It sounds like a joke song in a movie. I dont get how its such a big deal.

I agree. It's just your standard trap song. Better than some that I've heard most recently, but still average and forgettable. I also found her personality grating as hell when I started watching a radio interview with her. I couldn't last more than 2 minutes of her. Some of the lyrics are seriously cringey - "these expensive, these is red bottoms, these is bloody shoes" always makes me pull an "ugh" face. That is so embarrassingly bad. Even someone like me, who's only just started experimenting with songwriting and trying to write rap, would never write something so bad. Even terms like "I make bloody moves" means nothing and shouldn't even be used in that case. I know it's controversial to say but we all know why its been so popular - because she's a minority. Rap fans just want a black icon right now in this tense political environment and anyone will do. It's mindblowing the mediocrity that's accepted from rappers today, especially black rappers. So many of them can't write, can't flow, have bad attitudes (Future, Lil Yachty, Migos, etc). The public left Iggy out in the cold despite the fact that her music is on par with/better than the majority of the biggest rappers today. If her work was by any black female, people would have gone nuts over it.

But despite all that, I would still rather that she got the #1 than most other female rappers right now. She at least has a down-to-earth personality (however annoying) whereas Nicki and Azealia have overblown egos and I hate to see people like that get success. Cardi also came from nothing and it's cheering to see a new name break through at long last because it's just the same names at the top over and over and it needs a shake-up. I'd love to see Lil Kim, Missy Elliott or Remy Ma at the top but that's obviously never going to happen. And Iggy's done now, even though Team was one of the best lead singles I've heard of recent times.

Beyonce is a black identified African American, but yes she does have some mixed heritage on her mother's side. Her mother is of African, French and Native American, but obviously, in America, she will always be considered black because of the one drop rule. The Creoles of Louisiana are really multigenerational biracial people or triracial people who bred with other people like themselves for generations down the line, just think of two mulattos marrying each other and that is how it goes.
