1. Their economy is REALLY strong and diversified (Tourism, Pharmaceutic Industry, chemical industry, car industry & textile industry)
2. The question is rather, would Spain survive without the economic power of Catalonia

3. I mean after the recent outbreaks of police brutality by Spanish officials against Catalan civilians (especially against the elderly and children) I'm not surprised they're trying to do this. Spain is employing tactics of the 1800's to resolve conflicts in its country: violently downbeating any vague opposition. Even the centrists in Catalonia are now calling for independence.

if this is true now I understand why Spain won't let them go, Catalan is like the California of Spain

idk **** about this situation idk how to feel. On one hand, heck the police and the governemtn viva la revolucion. on the other hand, feels like the world is splitting further and further apart thanks to right-wing nationalism and isolationism. Is this a sign that """"globalism""" or liberalism is failing? should I be worried? Sorry if my worldview is too US-centric :emma:

Texas trying to secede from the US teas.

Will they able to function as a autonomous sovereignty economically without Spain? Becoming your own sovereign state takes a lot of work, structures and means, hopefully this region knows what they're getting themselves into and aren't just making a hasty decision without considering the far-reaching implications of this.

I'm not informed at all on the EU or on Spain specifically but these issues apply to all sovereignties.

Justice for Catalonia. The way how peaceful people were treated by police officers is disgusting. Hopefully they will become independent if they want it. Not from Catalonia or Spain myself but the imagery has shocked me.

The president of Catalonia is as bad as Rajoy, and if those who want to be independent think that joke of a man can carry a country by himself, they're in for a BIG let down. But it's their choice I guess. I live in Barcelona and I don't like the way Catalans are going ahead with this plan, it's all been done illegally from the start, but then the Spanish government went and ****ed up big time by showing how violent their authotiries can be.

He can declare whatever he wants, he'll probably be arrested, and no country will recognise Catalonia as an actual country.

The 20% of Spain's economy relies on Catalonia, but then again, most countries have richer and poorer parts. I am all for unity, not for Spain because I am Italian and I don't really give a ****, but if an entity is richer than another then what's wrong with helping? Puigdemont doesn't give a **** about his people's feelings, he's USING them to turn people against the Spanish government and fire up the crowds, but he's a politician, all he really cares about is all the extra money that Catalonia gives to the rest of Spain. And Rajoy doesn't want to lose that extra money. And the King of Spain doesn't want to lose that extra money. They are all disgusting assholes and I find it hard to believe that some people think one is better than the other.

Their economy is the strongest in Spain :toofunny: They represent 20% of the GDP :toofunny:  They have the most touristic city in Spain :toofunny: They're one of the 2 very industrialized region in Spain :toofunny: They have litteraly nothing to envy to any other part of Spain :toofunny:

Spain would be at loss and that's why they don't even want to let them have a referendum

Money is just one of the many reasons and it's clearly not the main one. Spain and Catalonia feud is 300 years old, it's not something new. And over the years Catalan culture almost disappeared. They want to be free in a Republic that would respect their right and their culture, there is nothing bad here.

People have reasons that are very noble, but the politicians like Artur Mas and Puigdemont don't give a **** about those, for them it IS all about the money. I very much respect people who have suffered through repression, I come from the South of Italy, and my people went through the same.

But, just like there's this weird fascist fashion in between the newer generations, there's also tons and tons of people who want Catalonia to leave Spain "just because Madrid steals from them and people from the South of Spain are lazy". There's a hell of a lot of misinformation and manipulation on all sides.

And it's also not very clear what an independent Catalonia would do for its people, no one really knows what the consequences would be, and if you ask, no one really tells you anything. I guess it's all about leaving Spain behind, then if it all crumbles who cares. Sadly Rajoy is an idiot and has no idea what dialogue means, because a lot of this could have been avoided had he just showed that he had a brain. But he clearly doesn't.

And one last thing; I have been living in Barcelona for almost 8 years, I don't see any repression here, it's a very free population, they speak mostly Catalan, Spanish has been disappearing from schools and universities, Catalonia itself IS ahead of the rest of Spain when it comes to things such as bullfighting or homophobia, so while the past may have been very hard on them (and it has been hard on so many populations around the world), they have come out winning.

And trust me, not everyone wants Catalonia to be independent, less than half of the population went to vote. So to declare a Republic off the back of that referendum and imposing it onto everyone else who couldn't vote because it was illegal is hardly a democratic move. Sadly the Spanish government and the Catalan one are more alike than they like to admit, and if they understood that then MAYBE they could finally talk and solve a few things.

Sorry for the rant!

Actually i think that a good part of the money that Spain uses comes from Catalonia, that's also a reason why they want to be independent...
