Their economy is REALLY strong and diversified (Tourism, Pharmaceutic Industry, chemical industry, car industry & textile industry) 2. The question is rather, would Spain survive without the economic power of Catalonia 3. I mean after the recent outbreaks of police brutality by Spanish officials against Catalan civilians (especially against the elderly and children) I'm not surprised they're trying to do this. Spain is employing tactics of the 1800's to resolve conflicts in its country: violently downbeating any vague opposition. Even the centrists in Catalonia are now calling for independence.
