OliverViennese 1,164
Betsy's selftitled debut album is OUT NOW! The Waiting.mp3 has now come to an end. The Welsh singer who stunned the blogsphere with her Fair EP last year has just released her 11-track debut album. For fans of Betsy the album might feel a little short, as she has already released many of the featured songs and almost all of them have been performed live. However - in my opinion - some of the studio versions of some of those just-live-previewed songs are really interesting. So this waiting has definetely been worth it. To get a little taste of this glorious record, here are snippets for all the songs: So now without further ado - THIS IS BETSY. Buy 1, Buy 10, Buy 20. Stream it, dance to it, love it. What are your thoughts on this album? OliverViennese 1,164
My take on this debut. Betsy’s selftitled album is great – but we sorta been knew. The opener Little White Lies (8/10) is one of the songs that perfectly introduces Betsy’s style. Her voice is amazing, she makes very catchy pop songs with heartfelt lyrics and she loves strings. Little White Lies is very good and saying this, I’m also referring to her music video. Her videography is really good in general. The next song Lost & Found (11/10) was probably my favourite song of 2016 and probably still is my favourite from this album. Fair (7/10) is the only song from her Fair EP that made it onto this album and rightfully so. It’s one of the few true power-ballads on here and showcases her voice incredibly. Both Last Time We Danced (8/10) and Heavy Head (9/10) were previously only performed live, so they are the first songs that were new to me (at least in their studio version) and they are ****ing bops. The former sounds like a solidly produced summer-hit, while the latter – althou sounding generic in some moments, has a catchy af melody. What feels like the most experimental attempt is Hope (7/10). She goes into this soul & gospel mashup and personally, I’m here for it. It’s such a cute little track! Apparently You Won’t Love Me (9/10) is Betsy’s favourite song and one can easily understand why. When I described Betsy’s style in the beginning - well it all shows again, with strings being rather prominent on this. The special thing about this – for me – is that this power-ballad introduces some jazzy-instrumentation by a trumpet and I especially love that short instrumental part of the songs. For me, she could have pushed it even further into this direction, but all in all, yes, it is a really great track. Wanted More (9/10) is her most well known song, I think, and the one with the best video imho. And even thou I listened to it a gazillion times, it really is a great pop song. I think right now So Much Love (5/10) is the only song that I could not get into really. With me, songs repeating one line over and over, are a rocky thing anyway. This song also has a sort of generic radio sound to it, that I’m not yet here for, but maybe I'll appreciate it more someday in the future. Waiting (9/10) however is one of my favourites. When I first listened to it, I liked it, but thought that it was not nearly as good as the flawless Wanted More and Lost & Found. But during the last times I listened to it, I realized how much better I like it now. It’s a cute little catchy pop song with a great melody and I love that. Body Burn (7/10) for Betsy’s standards is such a dark closing song for the album. Although it also is a little repetitive, it again showcases her beautiful voice and the way it fades out in the end – yes, it is a really good way to close the album. At first listen I didn’t know what to think of this and I guess that also came out of the “we sorta been know”-sentiment. I could only concentrate on the new songs and although I liked them, the whole thing felt like it fell flat from my expectations. Re-listening it I came to realize, that I celebrate this album anyway (and rightfully so) for all the songs that she already released, that I loved! I have more “favourite songs” from this, than I have from most album, so I cannot judge it by 5 new songs (which I also liked but some of them I need more time I suppose to get into more). I’m sure I’ll love it even more, the more I listen to it. And I really really really like it already. https://www.last.fm/user/derOlliM
