Much of the most profitable music is made by POC, and yet they are seldom awarded or recognized for it. :oprah:

I'm not going to conduct the conversation further because clearly there are those here who don't get it and I'm done turning a thread I made to celebrate cardi into a race debate with those who aren't inciteful enough to understand the issue.

people will pretend it's not an issue because they don't pay attention, but it really isn't a debate. POC are have been historically slighted by these institutions, regardless of their many contributions. It's nothing new - those crying about turning everything into a 'race issue', well sweeties I hate to say it, but American was founded/was built on/and currently still operates upon racial inequities and the exploitation of people of color, and will continue to do so until the entire system is overhauled. The music industry is no exception.

well, whenever I read a book, I do not look the color of the author's skin...ART should never be  about the skin color, it is about  the ART itself...

Good Lord. You're dumb. As if Langston Huges, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Nella Larsen or any other number of brilliant black authors make "ART" that ignores the color of their own skin. As if their work is not deeply connected to the social and political histories of racism in this country. Art is often about injustice.

there's not enough representation because few artists top the chart at all. there's not enough representation as a whole.

take the first year of the decade for example. in 2010 there were 17 chart toppers ,4 of which were Rihanna's.

black women are less than 10% of the population, yet a black woman had 25% of all number ones that year.

you were sayin'?

Women of color is more than "black women"

To ignore race in any context is to invalidate the existence and experience of racial minorities. colorblindness is (unintentional) ignorance girlfriend

But you suggest there is no reason to recognize the accomplishments of black artists in the face of continued industry racism. And you purport that race does not matter when it has a tangible bearing on the success and the safety of so many. If you actually want to avoid appearing racist, there is no need to aggressively derail a post trying to celebrate a black woman's accomplishments by dismissing the fact that she is the first black woman Hip Hop artist in a decade to top the Hot 100 and only the second woman of color to do so this decade. People just want to celebrate this accomplishment.

it's only easy to "piss" anyone off because the right has little to no perceptive consciousness outside of their own experiences. If it doesn't effect them directly, then it isn't a problem - it simply doesn't exist. They can't wrap their heads around it potentially being an issue outside of themselves. Which is the case with a majority of social issues, if it doesn't effect you, then you're predispositioned to not care.

And that mindset is harmful.
