Not lighthearted, but very comedic (which makes it very hard to take serious sometimes, though). Excellent follow-up, and very good political tie-ins with peak-era 19th century industrial Europe. The gay-subtext was amped up. WAY up. Not sure how it compares with the old ACD novels, but a friend of mine (who is a huge fan of the ACD novels) loved it, so I'm sure it did well.
