Inspiration vs Imitation

Featured Posts

With the amount of remakes and reboots today. And the way music stan culture is. The line between being inspired and influenced from something/someone and ripping off and copying something/someone has become blurred.

So in your opinion what merits something as drawing inspiration over stealing ideas and vice-versa?

imitation is when it's just like exactly the same thing while inspiration doesnt even have to be apparent. like you can get inspiration from someone or something without imitating it and maybe through your inspiration create something completely new and never-before-seen. IMO

It's about percent of the reproduction/ how many people will be able to see the similarity/ the instant recognizability of one piece/ the direct of indirect references. tumblr_inline_mutv0e0hSB1rxmmkz.gif

But as it is far from being concrete it's about the context. tumblr_inline_mutv0e0hSB1rxmmkz.gif

I’m not sure entirely. I think something like Bodak Yellow is more in line with imitation, since it basically uses the exact flow and rhythm as Kodak Black’s song.

An example of inspiration would be Roulette by Katy Perry. The synths and chord progression are somewhat similar to ILIR, but the rhythm and melodic structure is quite different. It’s almost a variation on ILIR, so to speak.

To me, nothing can ever be purely original, the genius of an artist is about elevating their inspirations, infusing them with their own intellect, and coming up with recycled art that manages to be deceptively original. Everything has been done before, it's about constantly reinventing things and opening up new paths for them in a way that'll make art in general evolve.

Picasso said: Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal. So in a way, artists are all guilty of unoriginality in the most basic sense of the word, it's the way they approach this unoriginality that makes all the difference.
