Roar's opening week sales were upwards of 550,000 whereas Gaga's were 218,000. Even with an airplay boost and impressive streaming stats (thanks to the music video), I think the highest it could have realistically gone is probably #2 (and that's with picture-perfect numbers). Even #2 is a little far-fetched; I think debuting and peaking at #3 is what would have happened had everything gone as planned. Applause just didn't have the radio or streaming power to take on Roar and Blurred Lines, the two songs it would have had to take on to hit #1 (I do believe that Applause would have beat out We Can't Stop in an ideal situation where no leak happened tho). That performance would've easily overshadowed Applause, and the vid would've been overshadowed with talk the next morning about the performance+the wrecking ball vid. Just because it didn't go #1 doesn't mean it was a decent hit. Unfortunately it could not compete with Roar or the other big hits at the time. It did great back in the day, and even is feautured in GTA V soundtrack. Lets hope more songs like Applause now that God DJWS will work on LG6.
