It's a mess the song leaked otherwise i think it would have gotten a higher peak with the video debuting with the song like it was meant to be and she would not be competing with katy for first day sales.

It stayed for 10 weeks sis

You guys don't understand what I'm saying.

it stayed 10 weeks because she had promo like every week for a month. If she pushed all that promo in the first week (like the OP was asking) it would have had a faster run.

I don't think it would have debuted at #1 even if everything had worked out in its favor. Roar's opening week sales were upwards of 550,000 whereas Gaga's were 218,000. Even with an airplay boost and impressive streaming stats (thanks to the music video), I think the highest it could have realistically gone is probably #2 (and that's with picture-perfect numbers). Even #2 is a little far-fetched; I think debuting and peaking at #3 is what would have happened had everything gone as planned.

Applause just didn't have the radio or streaming power to take on Roar and Blurred Lines, the two songs it would have had to take on to hit #1 (I do believe that Applause would have beat out We Can't Stop in an ideal situation where no leak happened tho).

Blurred Lines, Royals, and Roar were massive. Maybe she could have been #1 for one week; however, if she pushed all that promo during the first week, her second week would be a massive drop, most likely pushing her out of the top 10.

Royals was still a few weeks from becoming huge iirc, but Wrecking Ball had just came out and was huge. We Can't Stop was also still getting some attention.

If the song was debuted at the VMAs, the m/v released the next day on GMA

It was the year Miley had that VMA performance. That performance would've easily overshadowed Applause, and the vid would've been overshadowed with talk the next morning about the performance+the wrecking ball vid.

Just A Holy Fool

Applause was in the top 10 for a fairly substantial period of time. Just because it didn't go #1 doesn't mean it was a decent hit. Unfortunately it could not compete with Roar or the other big hits at the time.

If it had gotten radio deal, VMA performance and MV all in the first week it would have either debuted at #1 or #2. It would have fallen to at least #5 the next week tho.

So to answer you question, yes, it could have def debuted at #1 if it hadn't leaked/

If it went up to #4 the 2nd week only because of the VMA performance and the MV, then I think it's safe to say that it would have debuted at least at #2 if it had gotten those 2 things and also the initial radio and sales impact :)
