Classic/Older Horror

Older and classic horror movies and shows don't it for me. I'm definitely a Modern horror buff.

Most horror releases made before the 90s don't scare me. I can appreciate their acting, plots/storylines, design, and quirkiness/campiness but I don't get scared watching them. Maybe occasionally a little creeped out at few moments but never really scared or terrorified like I can get from watching more modern and contemporary horror material.

I've seen stuff like The Thing, The Fly, Fright Night, The Exorcist, Carrie, Halloween, Poltergeist, The Birds, Gremlins, Evil Dead, and many more.

The Exorcist actually made me laugh the 1st time I saw it as a kid.

Is anyone else like this?

Do y'all have any recommendations of classic/older movies/shows that would probably scare me?

I have the same issue. We are used to technology and special effects so movies like Friday the 13th etc will probably make us laugh.

i hate when people think horror is only good based on whether or not it scares them.

that shouldn't be the only qualification for judging whether or not a horror film is good.

Yeah it happens to me too. For example, I love The Exorcist, how it's made, the cinematography, etc, but I never get scared.

Tbh I don't watch horror movies expecting to be scared; I just love to see how they build tension and then leave you hanging or maybe a jumpscare or two. I love cinema so my approach is to analyze how it all functions together, so I don't know how people still watch them.

You can try watching some gory movie (there are some that were almost heretic in their time). But the most you will get is disgust and some suspense.

Also, it's totally random and depends on my emotional state. I remember watching "Shutter Island" at like 2 am in an open courtyard and I had to cover my face at some point, but then if I watch it again I can laugh pretty easily :giggle:

PS: I feel like Madison in AHS: Coven :selena:

I'm the exact opposite. Modern horror just seems too cliche/cheesy as ironic as that is. I'm rarely ever scared by modern horror. I guess cause most of it is remakes

The major selling point of a horror movie is the fear, creepiness, atmosphere, and/or freakiness/disturbed sensation it exudes. The scare factor isn't the only component but it's the often the biggest/most crucial.

Yeah, I get what you mean. But even if they don't really scare me, I just love them like Halloween or Night of the Living Dead.

Classic gives story that many modern horror films lack. I'll praise a horror film that comes out now if it can provide story, rather than jump scare CGI madness. Jump scares aren't always a bad thing, but when a film relies on it, there's a problem. I tend to stick to classics because it shaped what we have now.

No. I'm not scared by images at all. You can give me special effects til the cows come home and I'll be bored. Give me a story I can be invested in and I'll pee.

I can name countless modern horror movies that are original, rich in story, and scary(moreso than older horror releases); it's just most are arthouse or independent so they don't always reach the biggest audiences.

And let's not pretend that the 50s-80s weren't plagued by countless cheesy and awful B-movie horror movies. Those were the eras where they originated. :sure:
