It's an autoimmune disease. Once you have lupus there is no cure, and it is very often fatal. The kidneys is one of the primary organs it effects. The kidney lasts at most 10 years, and you are on immunosuppressants for the rest of your life (which she would have already been on for her lupus, but the dosage will most likely increase), which means that she is much more likely to contract and die from infectious disease like flu or pneumonia, and she is highly likely to develop cancer later in life. She will need a new kidney transplant every 5-10 years. Very sad. What would you think of heart transplants if kidney transplants have that somber of a prognosis? 俺の勝利は揺るぎない

It's about 10 years life expectancy (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15280687) but I think that's because the rest of the body is really screwed up from heart failure, and the new heart can only do so much. Your kidneys are the most delicate organs in your body, the new ones fail ironically because of all the hard drugs you have to take to suppress your immune system to not attack the new kidney. It's a catch 22 and you can't win But apparently they last 12-15 years so let me edit my original comment.

Well I still have hope for Selena since I had a heart transplant almost 25 years ago and a kidney transplant 6 years ago and I'm doing okay. You're right though, I only needed the kidney transplant because the nephrotoxic immunosuppressants common in the 1990s (cyclosporine, mainly) eventually caused kidney failure, and I did get cancer last year (although it was not major cancer and was completely treatable with laparoscopic surgery.) Thankfully we're learning more about the right cocktail of immunosuppressant medication to take, and I take a slimmer amount that most (for example, many transplant patients are put on the steroid prednisone, which I don't take, thankfully; it makes me incredibly jittery, among other things.) 俺の勝利は揺るぎない
