Booker signs on to Sanders's 'Medicare-for-all' bill

Sen. Cory Booker is throwing his support behind a "Medicare for all" bill being introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), becoming the latest Democrat floated as a 2020 contender to back the legislation. 

The New Jersey senator told NJTV News that he would sign on as a co-sponsor of the bill, which is scheduled to be rolled out on Wednesday. 

"This is something that’s got to happen. ObamaCare was a first step in advancing this country, but I won’t rest until every American has a basic security that comes with having access to affordable health care," Booker told the New Jersey outlet. 

He added that "you should not be punished because you are working-class or poor and be denied health care. I think health care should be a right to all." 

Booker's office didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about his decision.

Sanders put his push for a single-payer healthcare system at the center of his 2016 presidential bid, and he has pledged for months that he would introduce legislation. 

The idea is also gaining traction within the Democratic Party and is emerging as a litmus test for potential 2020 presidential candidates. 

In addition to Booker, Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) and Kamala Harris (Calif.) are supporting Sanders's legislation.

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) also announced his support on Monday.

I still don't like Booker, I know he is just signing on because it has 0% chance of passing and trying to appeal to progressives.

Just to be accurate, you know Democrats have wanted a form of Universal Healthcare for decades, right? Bernie didn't come up with this idea. 

They passed the ACA because that is what they could get through...and that caused resounding political waves that we will feel for decades.

What I meant by "direction" is a more refined liberal agenda, just how the platform for 2016 was the most liberal ever. 

Now I want to see how they sell this to middle America and the voters Hillary lost in the swing states Obama won.

Or they have always believed that healthcare is a right, not a privilege. 

It's not like Democrats aren't for social assistance and safety nets. They just operate in the real world of moving things along in steps...which is exactly why we are to this point! Without the ACA, the tide of public opinion would not have shifted to seeing healthcare as a right for all Americans. Now, that the majority of Americans have made that shift, we can build on that. We are here because of Obama. (and yes, Nancy Pelosi tbh)

It...it's almost like having an entire bill written and presented to congress with the best chances of passing and shoring up support takes time.

True but we can't ignore the liberal divide that was so especially obvious in 2016 and how Democrat's language is shifting to try to bridge that divide. 

Hillary supporters always speak of ultra liberals as one of the reasons she lost. The next Democratic candidate doesn't want to be a loser.

There really isn't one, not enough to worry over. Democrats are liberals. They just know to be prepared for a fight and that they will have to move in steps and stages. 

Of course they don't want to lose...no one wants to lose! Lol Just like this last election, too much is at risk. Let's hope that everyone learned a valuable lesson from this last election cycle.

It's almost like Bernie spent the entire time on the campaign trail stoking the flames of populism politics without putting forth detailed plans 

I doubt anything substantive came in the year he held off on revealing this legislation. He talked about scrapping Obamacare are replacing it with something "much better" without any plans, just like the orange guy in the WH! Maybe that's why he lost and the proceeded to sabotage the election  

But whatever Bern. You could've taken this along with you on the campaign trail while you had your "movement"/revolution. Interesting why you held off on putting out actual plans to say the least.
