Organizers said the gathering was Australia’s largest gay rights demonstration, as a diverse range of people clad in rainbow colors converged on the heart of the city to insist on equal rights. Though the postal ballot is non-binding, a “yes” vote is expected to lead to the legalization of same-sex marriage which could further fracture the government of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Ballots will be mailed out from Sept. 12, with a result expected some time in November The Sydney event followed a similar rally in Melbourne last month which organizers said was attended by 15,000 people. Police declined to comment on the numbers at both rallies. One day people will look back on this and wonder what the f*ck was going on in the world. I literally cannot fathom inequality and why it still exists. I'm proud of today's turnout, it's just so disappointing that the govt can't just change the legislation. The dignity of all LGBT australians and their families has been brushed aside for the false hope of respectful debate when our own ex PM believes his lesbian sisters childre would be better raised by two opposite sex parents. I mean, he said this in hansard. A permanent record of pur countries history... and these "christians" are now claiming we are bullying them and companies into equal rights. My friend's fiance keeps sharing 'no' stuff and it's just really disappointing to see. My cousin even married her partner at the British consulate on Friday and my whole family attended the wedding ceremony (we're all Christian) - so that was amazing to see that my extended family are supporting the movement as well. There's this one girl on my Facebook who is super conservative and constantly shares things about homosexual relationships ruining tradition and going against religious values blah blah blah. She cared to point out that if you become a civil partnership you have most of the same rights as a married couple here so "why do you need to have the word marriage" lollllll. I felt like commenting, saying that no one I know is married because of religion - religion is not the driving reason anyone I know wants to get married. They marry because they love each other/want to spend the rest of their lives together and have the legal rights that come with marriage. Oh that's good that they're supportive Yeah the guy I know sharing the 'no' stuff, well I'm pretty sure he's not religious and the stuff he's sharing seems more focused on the 'what about the children?' argument (that ship has sailed) and anti safe-schools, 'political correctness gone mad' stuff. I've thought about commenting, but I'd rather not damage any friendships over it so I just vent to my extremely pro-gay marriage friend instead haha. Do you feel him sir?
