"Madonna only became vocal about gay rights like ten years into her career" These are complete lies. Please don't try to rewrite history. Madonna was a supporter of the gay community from day 1. Her dance teacher who encouraged her to go to New York to become a musician was gay. All her circle of friends were gay people and she was always vocal about the gay community. Keith Haring, her ballet teacher and mentor, Christopher Flynn, her best friend Martin, they all died of AIDS. And from the start of her career, she always always spoke openly and in support of the LGBT community. She experienced first hand all the pain and suffering the gay community experienced in the 80s and 90s. She did Dancethons to raise money for AIDS research. She did lots of fundraising events to raise money for LGBT supporting organisations. What you are saying is just false. The fact you try to diminish Madonna and rewrite history to just make what Gaga did seem more important just shows your complete lack of knowledge. I'm not trying to "diminish" Madonna lol I love the woman I never said she didn't have gay friends or care about lgbt people... where do you get that from? the fact that I know as much as I know about her and never heard of her doing anything public before 1991 is enough for me to conclude she was not vocal. she was vocal enough to let everyone know she had the right to express her (hetero)sexuality, so why did she not send the same message regarding her gay friends? did she write a single song about them? did she dedicate her awards to them? did she make any statement at all? did she attend rallies? did she meet with the president? she didn't. Gaga did. and Boy George? well, pretty much all of the attention he got, he brought to the cause. end of.

The receipts are everywhere for everyone to see. 1 minute search on youtube. All the videos below are up to 1991, and these are just some examples. Not to mention all the stuff in print. Just another example is Like a Prayer from 1989, which included an insert with safe sex guidelines and a warning about the dangers of AIDS. “In This Life”, from Erotica, was written about Martin Burgoyne, who died of AIDS. Truth or Dare 1991 Truth or Dare showed off the lives of the gay dancers in her Blonde Ambition Tour and the devastation AIDS had wrought on the gay community at the time. 1990 Blond Ambition AIDS Benefit All proceedings to AMFAR. 1990 Amfar Benefit. 1989 Madonna & Sandra Bernhard sing I Got you Babe live at Aids Bennefit to raise money for AIDS research 1989 AIDS Dance-A-Thon 1987 AIDS BENEFIT Amfar CONCERT NYC All the proceeds from her July 13, 1987 concert at Madison Square Garden went to amfAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research and handed out educational pamphlets in the former of comic books to concertgoers telling them how to help protect themselves against HIV and again, combating the many ugly myths surrounding AIDS. So to answer all your questions, Gaga may have done all that stuff, but so did Madonna 20 years before when people were dying because they were gay from a horrible epidemic, and at a time, when being vocal about it could cost her career. I knew about some of these events and I know what In This Life is about but my point wasn't that Madonna never did anything my point was that Madonna was never an artist associated MOSTLY with her lgbt activism, and wasn't even associated with gay culture BY MOST before Vogue and Truth or Dare came out... why is this so hard to comprehend? I love Madonna and I even think she is by far the better gay icon both then and now, not because she does more but because she sends a message of pure strength whereas Gaga tends to cultivate the feelings she's trying to kill in order to truly heal which is tricky, especially in this day and age. all I was saying is that although Madonna's is the bolder personality overall, Gaga was ballsier earlier in her career... and balls was also what made Boy George. I understand what you mean. And sorry for the way I responded. I just feel that sometimes people overlook what Madonna did for the LGBT community. I see that the same thing has also started to happen with Gaga, when stans from other fanbases try to claim that their idol did more, when in fact, this shouldn't be a competition and all allies should be embraced. thefamebitch 834
Girl George should stay silent and irrelevant. This notion that Madonna is the only female artist who can do an in-depth documentary is laughable and pathetic. Stay in your coffin and keep rolling over, George. If you ever wish to educate yourself a little bit more about Madonna's history and contribution to the LGBT community, here's a nice and brief article: http://gaytoday.com/people/041403pe.asp Madonna could´ve been active for LGBT community in a very secretly way, yeah sure. But i was there a fan of hers back in the 80´s and i´ve never ever experienced a supportive LGBT message from Madonna till after 2000. I´m not saying she hasn´t suffer pain in a personal level. But as a gay active man back in the 80´s i was always missing her support.
