ANVEEROY 61,216
The naysayers have been pecking away at Lady Gaga’s right to pop stardom for almost a decade now — she was a fraudulent “outcast” poseur on 2008’s The Fame, an outcast suddenly grown too big for her britches on 2011’s Born This Way, a hopeless commercial disappointment on 2013’s ARTPOP and, as of last year’s underrated Joanne album, neither enough of an outcast nor enough of a too-big-for-her-britches pop star to satisfy anyone’s expectations, commercial or otherwise, anymore — but you can’t argue with the goods when consistently confronted head-on with the goods. And, (wo)man, has Lady Gaga got the goods. A vampy solo-piano version of “Come to Mama” was followed by a torchy version of “The Edge of Glory,” her stentorian pipes providing proof positive that the throat infection that prompted a show cancellation in Montreal two nights before was a thing of the past. The latter was dedicated to a friend of Gaga’s who recently passed away, as well as to anyone else in the room who might be in the process of losing someone they love, offering a short, thoroughly emotional respite from the sound and fury that had come before. And then it was on to even more sound and fury than before, as a march back to the front stage to “Born This Way” lit the crowd up beyond all reason. The show could have ended there, frankly, and no one would have complained. The red-lit, red-clad pageantry that followed for “Bloody Mary,” the meandering Beck co-write “Dancin’ In Circles” (he was in the room, apparently) and “Paparazzi” dragged on just long enough for the evening’s first tinge of boredom to set in. mister max 18,480
“It really means a lot to our family hearing you sing along,” she said, and you kinda wanted to hug her. “Bad Romance” was entirely unnecessary at that point, but it was nice to hear it nonetheless. The show has literally everything Apparently they think the show has too much "everything" Whoever wrote this review was probably an old-minded person that got too overwhelmed by the moving things at the show, that's why he/she praises the acoustic moments and despises the staging for the uptempo songs. Guess what? Gaga's charisma and talent when she's playing the piano is undeniable, but, as she stated herself, it's not HER show, it's the TEAM's show - that means dancers, band, designers, technicians... they are ALL performing with her, so it's okay if people get entertained by the choreography or backdrops too. I haven't watched the concert live, but from what I've seen I believe she has enough stage presence not to get swallowed by the technology when she wants to. Ziggy 11,838
The show does get boring by the end and she loses the momentum from the first half. When you see it, it's apparent. The first half is front-loaded with bangers and fun and the second is more of a slow jam. Both are great, but the thing is that the first half is SO high-energy that you don't want to slow down for long and she slows down for the bulk of the rest of the show. It's still good, but it feels a bit haphazard and she doesn't cover that dissonance well. There's not really a good lead up to Bad Romance and the energy has already died by then so people aren't going as wild as they were for the songs at the start. The ending kind of just stumbles into place; it feels like the first half is SO well listed that the end just kind of feels like she has time to kill even if the songs and her sound great. I loved the show, make no mistake, but I see where this guy is coming from. She just needs to shake up the set list a bit to have more sustained momentum because at the stadium shows, without the BM act of the show, this momentum issue is even more apparent. Again, loved the show, but I could see people around me (and myself during Angel Down despite loving the song) getting a little bored by the last half of the show. It's not that bad of a fix, really.
