A GGD Members DACA Dreamer Story

@geewillikers wanted me to share his DACA Dreamer story. Please read the whole thing and please show your support towards a member of our diverse GGD community during these tough times for him. 

Please note, this is not my story, this story is directly from @geewillikers who was brave enough to share it!

I have been protected by the DACA (Deferred Action Childhood Arrival) program for the past 3 years and have been able to attend college, obtain a driver’s license, and obtain a work permit through it. The actions of the Trump administration to end this program are set to be revealed on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. I present to you my first-hand depiction of the program to clear any doubts about what DACA is and who this decision will affect.

I was brought to this country illegally, without making my own choice at the age of 6. I have lived in this country for 14 years now without being able to leave or see any of my family whom all live in Mexico. I have gone through this country’s educational system for my entire childhood. In this system, I was raised to believe that through hard work and perseverance anything is possible. So, I worked hard, I graduated with honors in the top of my class. I was extremely involved within my community and because of my commitment I was able to earn various scholarships to pursue my dreams. The DACA program allowed me to earn temporary legal protected status in this country. And I say earn because this program is not simply given to anyone who applies, but the recipients must earn their status by fulfilling educational, legal, and work-related requirements. The DACA program gave me hope that I would be able to reach my goals and chase my dreams despite a bad decision that was made for me. That decision will haunt me for the rest of my life. 

I am devastated, angry, and frightened by what this administration may bring to the hardworking and passionate individuals who make up the DREAMERS such as myself. It is not right that our lives may be turned upside down in the blink of an eye, in a country we pledge allegiance to. We have spent the majority of our lives here. This is the only place we know as home. It is not right to think that I along with 800,000 other bright minds could be driven out of this country by hate and white supremacy. 

Before anyone begins commenting with ignorant words such as, "why don't you just becoming a citizen?" or "why didn't you just come in legally?". Firstly, understand that DACA a program is specifically for people who were brought to this county as minors. We were children. We did not have a say or decision as to the actions of our parents or family members that brought us to this country. If I could take it all back and make the choice, I would have never come because of the immense battles that I must overcome to have a life anywhere near normalcy. DREAMERS will unfortunately continue to be persecuted for a decision we did not make. Secondly, there is currently no pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients besides finding a way to reenter the country legally and then applying for citizenship through marriage. And of course, it is essentially impossible for DREAMERS to leave this country and come back legally because DACA does not grant legal reentry into the United States, simply protection from deportation. Trust and believe that I along with many other DREAMERS have researched for countless hours and consulted with various lawyers and legal consultants in order to find a pathway to citizenship. I along with the other DREAMERS want nothing more than to live the American Dream and be considered Americans. In order to receive temporary legally protective status from the DACA program we have all payed thousands of dollars for the application and renewal processes. We have all been through background checks and have been cleared. In order to be eligible, you must meet certain requirements such as (but not limited to):

• being currently in school, have graduated from high school, have obtained a GED, or have been honorably discharged from the Coast Guard or armed forces;
• have not been convicted of a felony offense, a significant misdemeanor, or more than three misdemeanors of any kind; and
• do not pose a threat to national security or public safety.

The only thing that separates us from being American is our birth place. Now that the world is watching and hopefully listening, I ask that you take a stand. It is easy but wrong to turn a blind eye to this issue because it does not personally affect you. Is it really in the best interest of the United States to remove the DACA program, revoke our protected status, and (once again) condemn us as illegal and subject us to deportation? Why deport our intellect, motivation, and passion to another country when we could use it here on American soil to truly, "'Make America Great"? Is that TRULY the best thing to do? If you are not fully informed on what DACA truly is, and what it allows us to have, please inform yourself before spreading lies that it is a form of “free ride” to anything because that it is not. DREAMERS earn their jobs, scholarships, and positions through excellence and determination. I guarantee that those who know any DREAMER would vouch for any of us and therefore reinforce the authenticity and legitimacy of this program.

Now it is time for our nation’s leaders to formulate and pass legislation to protect people like me. I call on congress to formulate, and pass legislation that will protect DREAMERS and everything that we have to offer to the United States of America. This is the land of opportunity and by purging DREAMERS you are denying us the opportunity to be great for this nation and you are denying this nation the opportunity to 800,000 great, diverse, educated, and hardworking minds.

I am sharing my personal story and insider view on DACA because I want everyone to better understand the people who are going to suffer from the decision the trump administration will make tomorrow. I want you to picture being in my situation or picture having a loved one in my situation. What would you then think is the right thing for America to do? Lastly, I am not sharing this to ask for any comments from anyone, let alone any angry, hateful, or derogatory comments. I give you my personal experience to help you see a perspective that might have once been unclear to you not to begin any political debates. Share this to help others see the reality of this situation.

We're going to fight like hell to make sure Congress passes DACA my friend. Will not tolerate an atrocity of this nature happening in OUR country! You are NOT ALONE.

It's hard to see members like you from my community getting your rights taken away especially because I know what it's like to be viewed as less in this country and to have to work harder than other kids simply based on your skin color, and yhe fact that YOU have it harder is what astonishes me that most. You  didn't let these obstacles in life stop you, you worked your ass off and did what others in this country are to lazy to do. You just like ever other Dreamer are amazing human beings that any country would be lucky to have. There aren't words that describe my hatred toward that bastard Donald Trump and I hope whatever happens it turns out in your favor

This is by far the worst decision the Trump administration has made so far and it's only been 7 months.

It really hits home because I come from a low income mostly Hispanic community. I have many friends who benefit from DACA. This isn't some small piece of legislation like a tax that won't be felt personally. It can turn entire lives upside down like you mentioned.

This isn't a decision that can be interpreted as any way other than flat out racist. I am disgusted.
