N. Korea Update: US Warns of 'Massive Military Response'

US Defense Secretary James Mattis vowed "a massive military response" to any threat from North Korea against the United States or its allies in a statement outside the White House after a meeting with President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and top national security advisers Sunday.

Mattis said Trump wanted to be briefed on each of the "many military options" for dealing with the North Korean nuclear threat.

"Our commitment among the allies are ironclad," Mattis said. "Any threat to the United States or its territories, including Guam, or our allies will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming."

Mattis called on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to "take heed" of the UN Security Council's unanimous position against North Korea's nuclear program and again stressed the US military's position.

"We are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea, but as I said, we have many options to do so," Mattis said.

Later Sunday morning, Trump again teased the possibility that the US would attack North Korea.

As he left church, Trump was asked, "Will you attack North Korea?"

Trump answered, "We'll see."

North Korea says it has successfully tested a nuclear weapon that could be loaded on to a long-range missile.

The secretive communist state said its sixth nuclear test was a "perfect success", hours after seismologists had detected an earth tremor. Pyongyang said it had tested a hydrogen bomb - a device many times more powerful than an atomic bomb.

Analysts say the claims should be treated with caution, but its nuclear capability is clearly advancing.

South Korean officials said the latest test took place in Kilju County, where the North's Punggye-ri nuclear test site is situated.

The "artificial quake" was 9.8 times more powerful than the tremor from the North's fifth test, the state weather agency said.

It came hours after Pyongyang said it had miniaturised a hydrogen bomb for use on a long-range missile, and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was pictured with what state media said was a new type of hydrogen bomb. State media said the device could be loaded on to a ballistic missile.

The North has previously claimed to have miniaturised a nuclear weapon, but experts have cast doubt on this. There is also scepticism about the North's claims to have developed a hydrogen bomb.

However, this does appears to be the biggest and most successful nuclear test by North Korea to date - and the messaging is clear. North Korea wants to demonstrate it knows what makes a credible nuclear warhead.

Some estimates say that this latest test comes in at about 100 -150 kilotons. For comparison, Hiroshima was about 15 kilotons.

I seriously don't know what to think of this  

One part of me is like,yeah it seems that our kids and grandkids will live in a nuclear fallout world where government will take over everything.Suddenly,Sci-Fi  Apocalypse video games seem not so distant....

But another part of me says that no one literally no one wants a nuclear war but all it takes is for Trump or Kim to hit the big red button and there goes any chance to preserve the planet.

I dont believe NK will do such a thing  it would end their whole country and population and it wont exist anymore  

They know the risks, therefore wont attack imo. Unless they do it by accident, so Japan is not safe  

Anw, I think superpower countries should use diplomacy and make them reduce this tests
