tthen 4,621
Didn't have any huge singles (a la Royals) but 1.Massive critical acclaim all around (91 on metacritic/2nd highest in 2017 after Kendrick) and 2.Pretty good sales. Also Green Light and Perfect Places were popular (not massive, but popular) so I'd definitely say this wasn't a flop (hell I'd say that it's a strong AOTY nom contender)
Andrew 375
No. Melodrama is a masterpiece. And she will never be able to match the success of Royals and Pure Heroine. Similar to how Gaga will never be able to match the success she had early on.

I'm no expert on sales, though . That being said, I mentioned those 3 because regardless of their success, I believe all of their music is quite bad and subpar (especially compared to Lorde, who has my AOTY). Completely my opinion though. I see what your saying. Well, most of us view it as just the sales. If it's of poor quality as well, we just say it's a bad album in addition to being a flop. But the word flop is always used to refer to sales alone. So, just be aware that most people's definition will differ from yours if you try talking about such a situation. Decodekid 28,331
I wouldnt call it a flop, Lorde has her own form of fame/popularity Long Live Gretchen

gagaslefttatoo 264
she's still young and already hv a hit b4, let the girl be experimental with this era. i'm sure another era of her will be as good as royal's era
judxs 762
Why do y'all use this "flop era" thing like every artist is supposed to have one?? Lorde is doing just fine, leave her be. Stop trying to make flop eras happen.
Anderson123 38,490
Hmm I think she was lucky Royals exploded on the radio, I'm pretty sure she didn't expect the song to top the charts. She's not the type of artist that makes music for the radio and Melodrama is one of my favorite albums of all time, it's perfect from start to finish. I always listen to it without skipping a song and that's not something that happens a lot. It's her most critically acclaimed work so far but come on, it's only her second album and she's 20, not to mention she writes her own songs and won a Grammy when she was around 17, that's pretty impressive. Just because any artist doesn't sell like Adele it doesn't mean they're a "flop".

She'll have industry acclaim and recognition but I think Royals was a fluke. She'll keep making brilliant music but I don't expect her to be a household name each album cycle. i also think Perfect places is the worst (only bad) song on the album but that's just my two cents Perfect Places is one of the best on the album in my opinion. Perfect second single. It's a shame the Gee Pee isn't here for her this era, but honestly when you're getting 90+ on metacritic, who even cares. Anyway, sales kind of mean nothing anymore. The music industry just isn't what it was a few years ago. I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!

Royals was the only hit she'd had in the grand scheme of things. So, a lesser selling album is completely expected especially considering she took nearly 4 years to follow up her debut. Plus, music sales are in the pits right now, so yeah. She was never going to be a massive star having hit after hit and selling out stadiums. That's not what she wants. I don't think the album is necessarily a flop because it's selling as well as you could hope for considering the type of album it is. I mean, I consider Lana to be going through some level of a comeback right now even though she still can't get hits merely because she's selling more than her last album, her new work is getting more views and likes than normal and she's about to start a proper world tour which is only her second ever tour despite 4 albums. So, Lorde's the kind of artist I put into that category. She's doing great for an artist of her kind, that's all. Well, apart from Justin (don't know why you included him, as he's huge right now), those acts don't really prove your point because Chainsmokers have sold more copies of their new album than Lorde has, have had bigger hits with it and are currently doing an arena tour with it and FH's sales certainly are laughable and much worse than Lorde's right now and no one was debating that. Team would like to have a word with you outside...

Otherwise, she would be getting more airplay for Perfect Places and Homemade Dynamite, which are above-average bops IMO, especially with the garbage "bops" we have been served in the past year. it may be underwhelming commercial wise, but critically it is not a flop. Althought, personally, I think its over rated
