Is Taylor Swift the most popular female pop star in the world?

Katy's Swish Swish was a bigger event than LWYMMD in my country(because of the fact Katy is a joke, but still). Taylor was big here during 1989. we will see with reputation, but she has a potential to break on the scene.

I live in the UK, I'd say she's barely just a household name.

I didn't realise until I was in the car once a couple of years ago with my family and I said Taylor Swift was hot and everyone had an opinion. No one in my family has a clue when it comes to pop-culture either. Strangely everyone had their say on her looks, but I doubt anyone could have named a single song of hers.

Shake it Off and Blank Space got big radio airplay here, but I think it was the fact she was on a lot of magazines and her fighting Apple that raised her profile a lot among the GP.

My parents live in Canada and even they wouldn't be able to tell you much about Taylor swift. Gaga on the other hand they know exactly who she is and what she does.

1989 went 6x Platinum in Canada, Red 4x Platinum, Speak Now 3x Platinum, Fearless 4x Platinum and Taylor Swift Platinum. She's had 16 (fixing to be 17) top 10 songs and 5 number one albums.

Taylor has been popular in Canada for a decade now.

Duh. But I'm just saying that my parents and many others don't care for Taylor and don't know much about her. However, lady gaga is a household name.

People not caring for an artist is different than people not knowing about an artist because that artist is popular in their country. Taylor is popular in Canada and has been for around a decade. That's what the OP is asking and that's the facts that answer the question.

Reputation may turn her into a global phenomenon. Im not sure how 1989 didnt though.

It didn't. Believe me, outside USA, 1989 simply put her on the radio. Nothing else. We got to listen to every single on the radio, everyday, but they were merely hit songs on the radio. She's not an artist people look for, not one people wonder about. Whenever her songs come up on the radio, people listen to it, but very few will look her up. I just think it might be interesting for an American citizen (if you are one) to realise that the whole thing surrounding Taylor Swift, as big as it gets, doesn't resonate around the world the same way.

Taylor Swift has yet to achieve global stardom level.

Her new video is breaking records, but I have yet to see headlines about it (outside pop forums) and I haven't listened to the song on the radio. Maybe next week, it's true that most of the times we only listen to a song on the radios after it reaches #1 in the Billboard Hot100 (unlike Despacito, which was already an European major hit before it hit the USA).

The Fame went 7X Platinum years ago (maybe higher now) and almost all her singles until BTW was in top 3

Gagas peak here in Canada was way higher than Taylor Swifts peak here tbh

In fact Gaga in Canada had the highest peak in popularity of anyone I remember

Well Drake maybe is a strong contender

In my country, for example, if you ask who Lady Gaga or Beyonce or Madonna is, everyone knows. They're global phenomenons and stars in the eye of the public.

About Taylor Swift, not everyone. I think she is mainly popular in the younger generation.

The same here in Germany.

Taylor Swift has actually never been very successful here in Germany on the Single and Album Charts:
