Ariana doesn't need to bring it the crowd do the singing for her.

So does the crowd anytime Gaga sings Edge of Glory but thats not the point I was making. When Gaga came out the world knew she wasn't here to play and that's still true 9 years into her career. Other Artists just aren't that exciting or push the envelope. The only recent pop artist I can think of that has given something new and isn't conforming is Lorde with her great music, image and interesting moves.

No I don't suppose Ariana is in the same league as Gaga but she does pretty well. Gaga is the best no doubt about that but if she was vegan like Ariana she would fulfill her potential. I'm pissed with gaga for not going vegan or more precisely like healthy raw till 4 or fully raw  coz I know how amazing it would be and I am concerned about her health. Miley is vegan aswell and she is pretty amazing like her latest video is not bad at all it has a natural health book at the beginning and is reaching millions with that imagery. The Malibu video is good with the beach and everything and inspired. Even Katy is growing on me with the food theme and stuff.  I still love Gaga and need her energy to give me a kick and be all amazing. I am one of the last people who would have been listening to pop music before gaga.

The thing is, it's not just about whether there are great artists out there today or not. You have to remember that the VMAs are build from the MTV era, where everything was flashy and image-oriented. Artists like Gaga, MJ, Madonna all understood this formula; where it's not just good pop music, but also creative and exciting visuals to accompany it.

So, when you gather a bunch of artists that lack personality and image (Ed Sheeran...cough...cough), it's never going to be as interesting at the VMAs in the past. And so far, the mid 2010s seem to be totally misguided when it comes to visuals and performance art. Just look at the state of music videos today. That's why I was glad when Taylor came back.

I agree.  I know we're all Monsters but Lady Gaga is the last exciting artist we've had. Like Ariana and other girls are cute but no one brings it like some of the old artists do.

Ariana does tho and more

This is so true. Why are artists not serving visuals anymore ? Wasn't it half the fun ? It's so depressing :(

That is not the general consensus. Just check the news articles.

No girl, the VMAs have always sucked. Young people like to do this thing where they hate their generation and say the past was better. That's because they only know about the highlights. I've been watching the VMAs since 2004 and I can guarantee you that it always had unoriginal, lazy and just okay performers, bar the few iconic ones we all know about. Oh and the hosts are usually terrible every year too.

It is because no new artist are really having that big of X Factor. It is mostly mediocrity.

It reminds me with one era in early 2000s where everyone just like that too and the major genres were so over saturated, it was horrible. It's like most of the new artists just riding on what's already founded by artists before them, who are already  becomes household names by that time, and don't want to try to do more cos they're lazy and not more than products made bu the recording label and have very little artistic integrity. And by the late 2000s none of them are heard anymore cos natural selections of course.

Fortunately for me, I don't just listen to one genre, so in those bleak years, I still find some new artists worth listening to, such as MCR, FOB, Nelly Furtado, and such

This is why gaga went to do stuff with the older generation to bring everyone together. There is politics so they like to divide and rule and music is one way to do that like they will be on the radio saying how the new music is no good these days and then the listeners copy that. It is a big problem people believing and repeating what they here from these people in the media. If anything sucks it is the music from the 60s and 70s. It makes me want to reach for the anti depressants. It seems like generations used to be bigger now they are trying to split it up even more like the driving force behind defining a "generation z" seems to be defining them as "comfortable with technology and social media" etc. when really they are going to be more green. the whole wifi thing is like rape really it is invasion of the body and the media are up to electo-magnetic objectification.

I'm actually glad I tuned in to the VMAs, because I would've never heard of Khalid. He seems to be a really good new artist.

The news articles are praising most artists tho wyd?

People claiming Logic's performance alone was one of the best performances in VMA history.

Where is your "general consensus"? Other than stan twitter and GGD.

I didn't see no one claiming Logic's performance was one of the best. Where did you find that general consensus? On Tumblr? Because Washington Post, NYT Times, Culture, Vanity Fair and several other magazines didn't praise the show and called it boring.
