Plus awards shows in general are steadily declining in ratings. Even the Grammys and Oscars. People don't watch TV as much as they used to.

I agree.  I know we're all Monsters but Lady Gaga is the last exciting artist we've had. Like Ariana and other girls are cute but no one brings it like some of the old artists do.

There are lots of great "new" artists, so no, it's MTV's fault for giving attention to the wrong ones

I absolutely agree.

The artists aren't even trying nowadays. When Gaga, Rihanna and Katy Perry were 22 or 23 years old, they took notes from older legends and made themselves huge entertaining stars.

Artists nowadays just don't try, they settle for a mediocre outfit and to them a live performance is just them singing in front of a mic, like a karaoke session.

That's not how you perform live.

There are a looot of great artists who aren't super popular though, so it might seem like there's no more good artists anymore because the majority of mainstream is pretty bad, but there are still some pretty amazing musicians who just aren't as popular.

Well, it was never a secret VMAs relied on older acts for ratings and actual performances, so when the older acts stopped going for different reasons, the other mediocre acts stayed and the show became...whatever these years' was.

this is the state of grace, this is the worthwhile fight

Katy Perry was a good host

if u love squinting your eyes for three hours due to cringe, then yes i guess?

she was too SJW political and it made the show cringy. her jokes were corny.

Her SJWish humor didn't really ruin the show and I didn't take the corny jokes seriously

I think while they're low-rated nowadays, they could still try to put on a quality show. Everything about them just screams low rent and feels awkward now. It doesn't feel like anyone is having a good time at these events anymore.

I also think part of the problem is that everything in pop culture is so fractured and there's just so much choice that everyone can stay in their own personal bubble of interests. Music videos have suffered a lot when it comes to the majority being able to take interest in them. For example, I doubt the average man on the street could recall what went on in the latest Bruno Mars video, and he is a A-list marquee performer. There are a few outliers, like T. Swift, but they're scarce (like once a year). Part of the problem is that MTV doesn't show music videos anymore - which is not completely their fault since the internet boom was going to happen whether MTV stayed true to their original ethos or not.

Not even close. VMAS suck because MTV is behind the times and still trying to be relevant when they don't understand that literally nobody cares.

I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill.

Ariana doesn't need to bring it the crowd do the singing for her.

I agree there are tons of great artists out there. However, the ones that are popular and on the charts right now are shitty for the most part.

Its vmas fault.. like they asked gaga to change her applause performance in 2013 so the attention would all be on miley. And we all know what we got from her :awkney:

So what about artistic quality performances/music??

Yes, there are Awesome artists out there and like 1 or 2 new great mainstream ones but that is it. Most Artists nowadays lack talent, creativity, originality, and stage presence. A lot of the new pop girls voices sound the same and a lot the rappers sound way muffled, way too auto tuned and sing about the same stuff (Drugs, Sex, Violence) Did I mention that their mostly all trend followers and totally uninteresting. Or maybe it's because Bey, Brit, and Gaga are hard to top and I'm just spoiled because compared to those 3, they seem like nothing?
